Head Gasket Estimate

Hey All,

I have a 1996 E300 with 167,000 miles and I know I've got a head gasket leak
from the rear of the block passenger side (I've read a few posts with similar symptoms)

I did thwe work on my gasser (W201 -190E 2.6) and didn't mind as the car had 310K miles on it, bu this I'll give to the experts.

1. What is a reasonable cost including rebuilding (milling etc) the top

2. What else should I do while the beast is apart?
*(Injectors? Waterpump? Timing Chain?)

Want to put a tank in the trunk for WVO/SVO in the E300 Need to find a place to store my OIL!
Still procrastinating about the biodiesel/WVO
Made some biodiesel but so afraid to pour it all in - I've added some and think I'll supplement my fuel to see how I make out

Made some biodiesel but the process scares me - methanol fumes are not your friend! Need to do this outside.

If a shop does the head gasket, you're looking at $1200. on that vehicle. This is just the R & R of the head and the various parts needed to reinstall it.

Once the head is off, you'll need to decide how much you wish to spend on it. Valves.......seats.........guides.........seals.........prechambers..........are all individual items that need to be evaluated for condition and with a determination of how many additional miles you wish for them to continue.

I had the head re-worked on my donor engine before I put it in. I believe the shop work was $280 and they installed new exhaust valve guides, checked and planed the head, and cleaned out the tons of EGR crud in the intake valves. I think the head gasket for my car was about $50, plus misc gaskets and such. I also did the timing chain which was another $140 or so. I did all the labor myself. Its really not that bad.

Keep in mind that this is for an OM617, not a 606 so your costs may differ. Just thought I'd throw it in there.
