240d resurrection

I searched the posts and I can't find what I need to know.

Thanks to members, I am confident that I have the ip timed. I also have fuel up to the injectors. Now, when I turn the key, the glow light comes on normally. Car won't start. Pulled all 4 glow plugs(pencil type) and they are good. With all four plugs out, I spun the engine checking for fuel vapor coming from glow plug holes and I noticed that the glow plug light still seemed to work normally. Does this seem correct?

I checked the glow plug fuse and it is OK. When I switch the car on, I don't really notice any particular sound coming from the glow plug relay. Should I?

Does it make sense that the glow plug relay might be defective even though the glow plug light COMES ON? Should I hear an audible click as the relay opens after a few seconds?

HELP. I really want to get this car started. The guy I bought it from said it had been completely rebuilt but never started.

Thanks.

Just start a glow plug cycle and either read the voltage from the plugs or use a test light. The glow plug light on can mean nothing.

Check the voltage between each glow plug connection and ground while it's glowing, you should be seeing about 11V at each glow plug. It is strange that the light came on with no GPs installed. You should hear a click after about 40 seconds when the relay disengages if you don't start the engine before them.

240D resurrected!

I ain't afraid o' no ip. I checked the glow plugs and they were working. I had gotten some good advice about setting the ip timing and when it didn't seem to work, I was told to try setting it at 18 btdc. This seemed to work with the drip method, so I tried starting it. I bled everything, several times. NO GO!!! I have a donor car, so I went and pulled the ip just for practice and checked out my Haynes book again.

Bottom line: The ip was 180 out of timing. I set the timing, got some superior drips, gave the glowplugs the full cycle and SHAZAAM!!! It started right up!!!!! To say that I am pleased is an understatement.

Now on to getting a new valve cover gasket and an intake/exhaust manifold gasket set. Next stop is to start the preparation to transplant it into my $400 euro with 4 speed. ZERO rust!!! and body has right at 200,000 miles.

I am thinking about using the intake and exhaust manifold from the euro 240d. Any problems that ya'll know about?

Thanks for the assists!
