Moon,

Its hard to believe that your car suddenly started doing this without any signs. I have never heard of anyone having problems with this engine without any warning signs.
Were you burning an excessive amout of amount before this happened? Was the idle throbby?
Unfortunatly you may be in for some bad news
I would take the car to a tech who knows how to work on the 3.5 litre diesel(one who has done it successfully before)
You will need a turbo check, then a compression and leakdown.
From there you may have some $$$ bad news on your hands. And if the car has more than 75K miles ,don't count on MB to give you any goodwill.
I have heard one tech in Texas tell me that he has simply re-ringed a 1991 350sd and done a valve job(about $4,000) and then the car was like new again....,in my case though I had a complete long block replacement
If you have new parts installed make sure they are the most current parts....as I heard that MB has made several modifications in this engine internally..pistons, rods, etc

good luck
