SLS popularity contest

Just for my own information

It really sucked on my wagon because the accumulators were bad and the pump puked a few months before the swap.

But, if I had access to all the parts to do a conversion, I'd love to do it on my sedan.

If you carry heavy loads (rafting equipment, lumber, people, trailer) it's absolutely spectacular.

same here. I think it would be a cool feature.. I do haul lots of heavy things in my trunk from time to time ;)

Sorry for being naive... but what is SLS?

Hatterasguy 09-16-2007 08:14 PM

I wish my SDL had it in the rear like the 560's. When you get a few people in the back of these cars the rears sag and it looks like crap.

Some Euro W126's had SLS on all four corners, nice, very nice.:D

Self
Leveling
Suspension/system

Hydraulic shocks. MB messed with it for awhile along with air shocks.

Self Leveling System

found on the wagons and some euro sedans...

uses a hydraulic pump and accumulators on the rear suspension to always keep the rear of the car at a preset height regardless of load.. it does have its limits though

I just had the opportunity to test my SLS. I picked up about 250 3'x3' sheets of glass from a greenhouse that was being torn down near me. After I stacked and strapped them I started the car and watched it rise up to proper level. With all that weight in the back, it drove quite smooth. I know I need to change my accumulators or I would have risked another 50 sheets.:D

No I'm not selling anything......yet :)

Wow, I like the responses!

Would anyone be interested in a system that converts the rear and front OE shocks to four corner air suspension? without drastically modifying ANYTHING?

Controllable in car front or back adjustment.

Cheap parts for maintainance, no EXPENSIVE hydraulic shocks or pumps to fail all parts user servicable and available at any auto part store?

Hatterasguy 09-16-2007 10:52 PM

Not really. It will never be as good as a stock set up.

Interesting idea, but in conflict with my ever-present KISS principle.

ForcedInduction 09-16-2007 10:56 PM

KISS.

I'd rather go with a stock-ish hydropneumatic system than rig up an air suspension and have to figure out how adapt shock absorbers for it.

Hatterasguy 09-16-2007 10:59 PM

I have seen the airbag systems they sell. You would need to mount a compressor, probably in the trunk, tank, and run a bunch of air lines and wires. Which would require drilling into my W126's virgin factory sheet metal!:D

Then you need a very modern looking controller mounted somewhere on the dash.

All that aside, the aftermarket systems would be dumb on a MB. It would sound like a freaken low rider, you could slame it down, get the nice air hiss when you park it etc. You would have to totaly rebuild your suspension as well, any old part will fail when you start messing with it.
