Belly Pan??

I have a question for all of us 126 and 123 diesel owners that are tired of the oil seepage that is common in these high mileage engines staining our driveways and garage floors, has anyone ever had any luck installing one of those plastic PANS under the engine that were used on the W124 or any other model. To my limited knowledge, there was never a factory bellypan on the 126 or 123. I think that some cars (maybe the 124 300d) even had what we called a diaper to soak up the oil that collected in the bellypan.

It would be better to fix the leak(s) than to put a diaper on it.

The belly pan is good for aerodynamics, but it sucks when you have to change your oil, cause you have to take the belly pan off to get to the drain plug.

The other problem associated with the splash pan is it traps the larger volume of oil that drops while driving which would normally hit the road. Now you have a saturated pan leaking on your driveway......and if it rains the water draining into the pan makes a nice oily slurry that runs down your driveway.

Best is to just use a sheet of E-Flute brown cardboard under your car on the driveway until you can fix the problem. When the cardboard gets too dirty...recycle it and use a clean piece. Or use an old cookie cook pan with a layer of kitty litter in it to absorb the oil under the area that drips.

W126

My W126 coupe has a metal factory skid plate, which was installed on the vehicle back in 1995.

It was done to protect the pan, because the car is lowered with Eibach springs on it. It was done at an Independent garage in Santa Ana, and my receipt for the work doesn't have the Mercedes Benz part number on it.

I am told, however, that this Mercedes Benz W126 part is now NLA.

Here's the part number for that skid plate, if you're in need of it (the number)

The W124 belly pan would indeed be a PIA for oil changes but since I discovered that I could get all of the oil out through the dipstick tube (and verified it by then pulling the drain plug -- nary a drop came out) I haven't had to remove it. I now use that technique for both cars.

I have a crash guard on my W123 car -- didn't like the way it tended to lead with its chin. I got the guard from FastLane and did a DIY with pix last year.

There's a tool for this, topsider I believe. Just sucks the oil on out. I use it on my SDL and 750iL
