Jist bought a 1982 300 TD, 177k on it. Real good shape, runs well. DO I need to use additives regularly? If so, what and when? Thanks!

new owner-do I need to use additives?

If you mean for oils I suggest you try http://www.vtr.org/maintain/oil-additives.html & read & digest.
Alternatively there are some very good threads in archives
(older messages) on the general subject,in this very forum.
Good hunting.

All that you need to do is put a good synthetic CH4 oil in the crankcase and use Power Service fuel conditioner every fillup.

Probably depends on how well your 300TD is running. I would try a bottle of Redline Diesel Fuel Catalyst(RDFC) and see how much of a difference it makes. I found that by using it in my '85 300D, the usual clackety-clack of the engine is significantly reduced as well as the amount of smoke from the exhaust. The mfgr of RDFC suggests a full bottle at first as a "cleanup dose" then 1 oz every fillup after that. You may want to add more than 1 oz. Once again, it all depends on how well your engine was previously maintained.

Good luck and welcome aboard the the diesel club.

Hey, pkmorgan17:

Are you the guy that was at PAW on Tuesday? I think that you can see what I meant when I said that this site would be a great resource!

People here seem to be very partial to the Redline product line. There are other products out there, but the Redline Diesel Fuel Catalyst or 85+ gets the most raves. And yes, I do believe that it is “worth it” to use a fuel additive; and I am a person that is very skeptical about all the snake oil garbage out there for cars in general.

Check out this thread - it is a good ‘going through’ your car list when it is brought to a new home.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=19269

And about the ALDA adjustment that I mentioned, use the search function to get more info (also check "aneroid"), but here is a thread where I described the results:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=19762

And let me know if/when you want to sell that SD. I kind of like the idea of a matching set.

Good Luck!
(And if you’re not the guy that was at PAW, then disregard any personalized references.)
