Curious about Jeep Diesel

I like the new Jeep Wranglers and I saw that in the UK they are offered with a 2.8 liter four cylinder Common Rail Diesel engine. That engine does'nt exist in the States as far as I'm aware. Does anyone know if it's a Mercedes engine?

Italian, a VM Motori R 428 DOHC specifically, and it was available for a short time in the Jeep Liberty (What the Cherokee is called in the states). The current Jeep Grand Cherokee uses the same Mercedes 3.0L V6 as the E/ML/GL/R320 CDI's.

IIRC, the 2.8L CRD engine didn't offer any fuel economy advantage over the similar displacement gas engine.

Not much of an advantage, only about 3mpg.

Now move up to the current Grand Cherokee and the Diesel still has a 3mpg advantage over the V6 but about 7mpg over the V8.

It's only 0.2L and 2 cylinders more, but the Mercedes V6 has 58hp and 81ft/lbs more than the wimpy little VM Motori's 2.8L 4-banger.

VM Motori's 2.8L 4-banger seems like a dinosaur left over from the 70's.

Um, actually the 2.8L CRD gets about 6mpg better than the 3.7L in the Liberty. That's nearly 30% better mileage.

3.7L - 15-16 city, 22-23 hwy.
2.8L - 20-21 city, 28-29 hwy.

The wimpy little 4 banger stock has 40 more hp than the 3L 617.952 at 160, and develops 300 ft-lbs of torque. It moves along pretty well, and a hell of a lot faster than my 617.952 240D.

???? Compared to what? Bluetec? It's a common rail, very quiet, and nothing like the dinosaurs of the 70s or even the Cummins 12 valve. You know, the W123 diesels we know and love...

Observed fuel economy of the CRD by numerous car magazines was a dismal mid to low teens.

I read somewhere that had to do with them doing something funny with the diesel fuel return lines?

The engine is made by Italian company VM Vettori, it has many issues including overheating and low engine life, wish they had put the MB OM611 instead, that would make it an excellent vehicle, the engine has gobs of low end torque and is well built as well.

I had the oportunity to drive a liberty crd for a a few weeks. I was not very impressed. Power was weak, and I would only get about 21 hwy and 17 city MPG

And the 2.8 has a timing belt.
Mercedes fixes that.

Wasn't it a Detroit Diesel outfit to start with anyways?
