I just experienced a "Mercedes Miracle"

I was chugging up the NYS Thruway when just for grins and giggles I put on the cruise control. Lo and Behold, It held me at a STEADY 75 for over 20 miles! Uphill and down, passing people and pulling back to the right lane, my speed never varied more than 2-3 mph!

The miracle is that this has NEVER worked properly. In the past if I dared put it on it would accelerate and then get off the pedal kind of if you were tapping your right foot to a song. It would never hold a steady speed. The kicker is I did nothing to fix it!

Happy Happy Joy Joy

Mercedes vehicles are known to self-heal on certain occasions. However, the healing is usually not permanent.

This self-healing/self-ailing behavior happens several times a day for me I expect this to continue until EVERY vacuum and electrical device has been replaced, which should be sometime in my next life...

Mine did that a few times, then it went dead completely. I know its the AMP, but I don't want to pay for one.

Our 300D wouldn't shut down right away, so I fixed/re-connected all the vac lines properly, immediate shutdown. Two weeks later it starting taking 5-7 seconds to shut down again. I let it be and figured I'd fix it later. 4 days later....it shuts down faster than ever before. Its immediate when the key is turned. Healed itself, and has been working great like that for weeks.

I've been teased before. One learned individual on this forum reminded me that things that fix themselves are never permanent and he was right. Enjoy the good times because that vacuum or electric window or climate control gremlin is there just waiting to wipe that smile off your face.

It occurs to me that there might be a market for a 'Benny Hinn' of automotive miracles. Give me $25 and I'll send you a small vial of holy synthetic oil.

The Griesl will give me a head fake about once a month. And what's funny is it seems to be on the same stretch of road. So I may send like an atmospheric and geological study team out there to figure out why my CC likes this stretch of road. Major research university here might actually take it as a project. I used to get real happy when it worked, thinking, wow, it's fixed itself. Then I'd be let down when it wouldn't work the next time. Now when it works, I don't get my hopes up, but I chuckle, thinking, this car really communicates with me.

Mine usually works, but sometimes does the "dancing foot" thing... I also swear it didn't work when I first bought it...

That leads me to ask - what is the proper way to use the CC on these cars? It seems to me that you have to set the upper and lower limit by quickly flicking the lever up and then down (or was it down, then up)... am I crazy?

There is no such thing as an intermittant problem, just intermittant symptoms.

After doing a little cruise control trouble-shooting myself, I found these things are pretty sensitive to the condition of the electrical connectors. Try cleaning and tightening the connectors on both the amp and the actuator. One marginal pin connection can cause all kinds of strangeness.

Mine only wants to work when it is good and cold outside.

(As you will not from my location, that is rare indeed!)

The CC in my '82 300SD works flawlessly at 60-70 mph. Anywhere in that range it is rock steady.
However, if I set it at say, 45 mph, it will control only to within 5 or 6 mph. It will allow the car to slow to about 40 mph, then WOT acceleration to 50 mph, then close throttle coast to 40 mph and so on. Its quite a ride!
