Did MB design the wiper arm to "give"?

Last winter I got in and fired up the car to go to work, the windshield was frozen, so I picked up the wipers to pop them loose and then went to turn them on so I could run a hose over the window. The passenger side glued itself back down, when I turned them on it stayed put but the driver arm worked fine. I thought I had broken the linkage, came back to it that afternoon and turned it on and all worked normally. The other day I picked up the passenger wiper to clean the blade, and the arm moved around with medium resistance, as soon as I turned them on the arm picked itself right back up into the proper position with it's mate and swayed along.
Is this supposed to be this way or am I heading toward an imminent failure?
This was on the '80.

Maybe, my 240 had a failed wiper, sometimes, (drivers, of course) finally gave out. You may want to inspect, you'll have to remove the intake grilles, and the center piece, a couple of screws, and four, I think, plastic rivets. The hold down pieces for the grilles are tricky to deal with. I just punched 'em through and never did get around to replace, that car died. Those pieces I bought from the dealership for a whopping $0.18 each.

I think you'll find that the nut holding the wiper arm to the splined pivot connection needs to be tightened. If you don't tighten it, eventually the splines will strip completely and it won't wipe on that side anymore.

when you knock out the centers you will see the little pins when you remove the grill. they can be reused, just replace them in the rivit hole,
and when you replace the grill. then just knock them in.

There's a cover that can be pried up to expose the nut.
For an intermittent problem, this is your first place to look.
