1986 300 Diesel chuggin on the highway

I am lookin into buyin a 86 300 but i test drove it and i seems to have no power over say 55 mph. Besides checking the fuel filters is there anything that typically goes wrong with this year car? Injection pump, fuel transfer pump, relief valves??? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kurt Kiefer

300D - SD - SDL? Some models can get the banjo bolt gunked up and it reduces the boost to the turbo. Dirty Air Filters can also rob significant power as well as valve adjustment on the D and SD models. Are you familar with these cars to know they don't excelerate like a gasser - no offense, just have to ask.

The 86-87 SDL are fast,no valve adjustments on them, cracked heads on occasion...see if the trap oxidizer is still there, will be most likely plugged, free recall at MB dealer, maybe a free exhaust too...anyway,if the muffler looking thing is still on the pass side along the engine,it needs to be removed.

I had a '79 300CD I know the meaning of the word slow, I'll check out the exhaust if I can, but you say that MB will do it for free? I was a diesel mechanic by trade for 5 years or so when I was working through college so i know my way around diesels in general. Where is the Banjo bolt located?

I think he really meant the alda.

First thing to do is change the fuel filters, then check the alda fitting for being clean. If it is plugged or has a broken or cracked line you will not get any extra fuel when it comes on boost, so you will not get as much power as with a na engine, at least it feels like less because of the higher rear end ratio.
