Don't get frustrated...get even.

MGM, I have W123's and love them. Each month I try to pick up a new skill so as not to have to be dependent on a shop. This month it's AC. Lots of stuff online. Amazon to get the ASE cert tech manuals. Study for and take the 609 cert test online.

All that is not easy, but it's not rocket science either. Four zones, components along the way, safety sensors and switches, testing and charging protocols. I'd bet the stuff you do on your job is more complicated.

Regarding compressors (Silver Bullet just blew hers). also study up on the temp and low pressure switches. They control the aux fan, an important element when you are stopped in traffic at idle.

I am ramping up to convert Gray Ghost back to R-12. As this is a hobby, and luckily it is getting cooler, I'll study up some more while waiting for my basic R-12 gear and gauges to come in from ACKITS.COM. I plan on making a vac pump to pull 29"Hg or renting one from Autozone.

Regarding docs, most comments are right on, but I have had the pleasure of associating with folks, some even who look like kids, who know their stuff and people. Just lucky, I guess.

The difference between doctors and mechanics? A doctor washes his hands after he takes a leak!! I also have lots of jokes about pilots!! As far as troubleshooting AC problems, someone let me know how their luck runs, I've got one on my '94 S350D that'll blow your mind. Any takers?

Low pressure = AC clutch
Hi temp = aux fan

Both protect the compressor. SB's compressor appears to be not working. While still getting around to testing things (cool weather now = low priority), I suspect a defective hi temp sensor or the wiring connecting could have contributed. Point is, the AC blew cold coming back from Texas (eBay pickup), then didn't (refrigerant leaked out, low pressure, no compressor). Replacing the seals at the compressor, ensuring alignment, proper torque, vac down and recharge, it worked again.

Maybe in the spring I'll have time to remove the existing compressor to determine if it is a new or reman, check all the components, do a full system fluxh and put it all back together. May also do a flow-through condensor, and, as has been suggested by other posts, other threads, hot wire the aux fan to be on when the compressor clutch engages.

If you think about it, the two situations (scientist ->doctor & engineer->mechanic) are pretty parallel.
only you dont ask the car to cough whenever you open the hood and touch the engine.
