05 06 e320cdi or new v6 bluetec?

I'm considering buying in the future. Any thoughts between a used 05 or 06 E320 cdi or the new v6 bluetec?

Ok, just from what I've heard someone tell me, get the one with the inline 6, supposedly the V6 has some bugs in it.

I think those bugs are called UREA, they eat the exhaust and make the system cleaner.

My wife has an 05 CDI. AWESOME car!!! The inline 6 has been sold in Europe for years and should have all the "bugs" out of it. I can't imagine any advantage that the V-6 would have. We routinely get 32 mpg and on long trips get 35. The acceleration is incredible. What I don't understand is why anyone would buy a 320 gasser.

Also, you can get a much better price on an 05.

This isn't true, the bluetec E320 does not use the urea injection system (not yet anyway). I've confirmed this with my dealer as I was looking at an '07 and wanted to know what extra maintenance was involved with the bluetec engine...none over the I6 is the short answer.

My mistake then. I was under the impression thats what the "Blutec" was all about. Cleanliness.

It does have a more advanced emissions system than the CDI. Just not the urea injection system that uses a consumable that needs to be replenished - that system is not presently used in the USA.

The bluetec system as it currently stands meets all of the emissions requirements the EPA has established without the need for that additional system. According to the dealer I visited that may be coming in future years but for now the bluetec does not have that system.

As well as choking the engine's exhaust, additional fuel consumption and a substantial addition to the "diesel premium".

Huh... That's a real head-scratcher. I guess all of us are seriously misinformed -- it's all just vaporware (no pun intended) for now?

Seems you are right, though. I'm cut/pasting below from the mbusa.com website FAQ section... (Emphasis is mine.)

*****

To meet even more stringent emissions requirements, the BLUETEC system *could* be equipped with another module — AdBlue injection, replacing the DeNOx storage catalytic converter. A water-based urea solution, AdBlue is carried in its own tank and metered into the exhaust in minute quantities — quantities so small that the tank only needs to be refilled during routinely scheduled maintenance. When AdBlue is injected into pre-cleaned exhaust gas, ammonia (NH3) is released, converting nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen (and water) in the downstream SCR catalytic converter. Called SCR for selective catalytic reduction, this process creates the most effective method of diesel exhaust gas after-treatment currently available. In Europe, AdBlue injection has already proven effective in more than 15,000 Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles.

Cheers, John

What mpg does it get when you drive it hard? I always wondered that.

The I-6 is a more robust and smooth design. The V6 uses balance shafts to stop vibrations.

The only advantages I can think of for the V6 is its newer and it has a bit more power. However, simple ECM tuning for the I-6 will get power very close to the V6.

I looked at the MPG figures for the Bluetec, and it seemed that the CDI had better figures. I drove a CDI back in January, and loved it. Too bad it was beige, but still - if I had to buy a newer diesel car, a new 2008 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI (Common-rail) or a lightly used W211 E-Class CDI would top my list. 369 lb/ft or torque? Sign me up.

I like the fact that the CDI has an inline-6, too.
