Im a first time Mercedes owner and my 1986 300SDL driver side door will not lock! The vacuum pump locks all the other doors from any other lock access point but not the drivers side. The lock will NOT manually push down and I really need it to! What could be the cause of this. Also, the vacuum doesnt seem to be activating from the drivers side door lock.
I just bought this car today and I got some other SMALL chassis issues. The center console seems be bulging out and the wood trim that surrounds the shifter just wont stay down! The clock doesnt work. The vinyl on the seatbelt towers are coming off (how do you remove them to re-upholster), and is it normal for the heat to take 1 minute to start warming up? Any tips on this model Mercedes would help a lot...tips, tricks, all that. Also...is this model year the doomed diesel year? |

Quick update...after I did a little fooling around Ive come to find that the manual lock on the drivers side (DS) will push down and operate manually with the door shut. However, the DS key wont operate manually or electronically from the DS lock...it will work everywhere else though. So, I need to know WHY the door wont lock wont lock or unlock from the drivers side and why every other lock point DOES.

Mercedes designed the lock that way so that you have to lock the door with your key from the outside, thus, it is (almost) impossible to lock your keys in the car. Its a great idea.
![]() The wood might need to be glued back down or the tabs that hold it in place may be out of whack or broken. As for the heat issue, its not a gas engine, it takes a diesel a little while to heat up enough to feel anything. (Because they are far more Efficient than a gas engine, less waste heat) My car takes up to 5 mins of driving in the winter before I get much usable heat. 1986 is a good year for the diesels. The om603 6 cylinder diesel is very very reliable if properly maintained and NOT OVERHEATED. Overheating can crack the aluminum head on the engine = big expenses. Maintain the cooling system properly and you'll be fine/it will run for a looong time. The "bad diesels" are the 1991-93 era 350SDL 3.5 liter engines. They have a tendency to bend their rods and fail.
