83 300 TDT Turbo Oil Leak
 

Hi Guys! This is my first post of the forum and I'm hoping for a little good news.

I have a 5 cylinder engine that seems to be in otherwise great shape that seems to be leaking oil into the air filter (even shows up at the air intake upfront) and generally gets all over the place. My mechanic is 45 years MB retired and knows diesels very well. He feels my problem is in the rings and therefore not worth chasing. I'm not sure how much oil the engine uses but it is quite a bit. It doesn't smoke or anything just gets loose in the engine compartment. It seems like it's all on the passenger side of the engine. Any comments, direction, instructions would be appreciated. The body only has about 130K on it and the engine less that that. Thanks.

You would need to clean the motor to find the source of the leak.

OK, do me a favor. Walk out to your wagon, walk behind it facing the rear hatch. On the left side just at about the mid line, below the glass is a model designation plate. Count the "T's" and get back with me!

You do need to clean things up and look closely for the leak. In the meantime, likely cuprits on the pass. side: drain pipe from air cleaner to oil pan, turbo drian pipe in the oil pan, valve cover gasket. Good luck!

He is talking about blow by guys.

Try resealing the oil separator in the air filter housing first. If it is properly sealed, little or no oil should get on the filter irregardless of how much blow by there is. There are some threads on the subject, try using the search function.
