What is the minimum vaccum plumbing needed for a 1985 OM617 to run nicely?
I collect and swap OM617 engines into everything I own, and have wrestled with making them as simple as possible, removing the ALDA, circulating-air control lines to the turbo, no EGR-valve, etc.
However, I'm just doing this by trial-n-error, and don't really know the over-all effects of my actions. currently, the only vaccum line I use it from the vac-feed through a solenoid to the shutdown actuator so I can live a semi-normal life and kill the engine without opening the hood! (BTW, what is that plastic thing on top of the IP that has vaccum ports on it??) I could care less about emissions, since we have no emission-testing in MN, and I only run WVO or B100, so I'm way ahead of the polution curve of you petrol-people anyways... I just want my engines to run well, have long lives, stock power levels, etc... (no turning up the boost for me!) I've got a boost gauge that usually hovers around 9psi under acceleration and a nice VDO pyrometer that I haven't installed yet, but will soon. What should I expect for exhaust temps? Where should I put the probe for the pyrometer? (like how far down-stream from the turbo?) I'm running a straight 2.5" pipe all the way out the back of the vehicle with no muffler, and it's plenty quiet, seems the turbo knocks alot of the noise down, unlike any of my OM616 projects I tried a straight-pipe on, they'd chip your teeth! Thoughts? Input? Flames? Tech-help? it's all welcome! Even post a you-tube of yourself doing an interpretive-dance about OM617s if you've got one! |

The 616's and 617's I have owned in MB vans only had vacuum shut offs. There were no other vacuum components.

[quote=Beatnik Poet;1637559](BTW, what is that plastic thing on top of the IP that has vaccum ports on it??) Vacuum Control Valve, goes to the transmission modulator.
[quote] Vac line to the brake booster, and to tranny. That's all you really NEED. However, vac operates the climate control stuff also, if you have the ACC.

As for the ACC system, I'm convinced that it doesn't run on vacuum. That crap runs on voodoo. The only way it's ever going to get mine to work is if I hire a witch doctor to dance around my car with a dead chicken. I'm sure of it!

LOL, vac does "move " the flaps, an electrical signal tells which flaps to do what, supposedly!
