EGR? Injectors? Gremlins? Resonators?

I'm not sure what is causing my issue, worse is my inability to search for it as I can't think of decent search terms.

My car accelerates fine until I hit 45 or 55 or 65, it varies, when I try and hold at that speed the car starts to surge (like someone is tapping the gas pedal and letting go)..once I get to 75 or higher it runs smoothly.

Resonator is something i think i read a long time ago and I'm not sure if I even rememebered correct.

Any suggestions? Of what to dump in the tank or to clean? I'm still ignorant with respect to this engine so please be specific unless it's blatantly obvious. Even then it might be prudent to assume I'm more ignoart than you could ever imagine.

thanks so much

Want to put a tank in the trunk for WVO/SVO in the E300 Need to find a place to store my OIL!
Still procrastinating about the biodiesel/WVO
Made some biodiesel but so afraid to pour it all in - I've added some and think I'll supplement my fuel to see how I make out

Made some biodiesel but the process scares me - methanol fumes are not your friend! Need to do this outside.

Disconnect the cruise actuator (if you have one) and try again.

Since your engine is completely electronic controlled, your accelerator position sensor my have a dead spot.

Hmmm....

Where would I find this actuator? Under the dash or under the hood? I actually had a bizarre "check engine electronics" warning come on, I drove it several times and everything seemed fine and then it suddenly went off. Usually "check engine" lights never go off until you see the doc. I need to pull the codes tomorrow and see what it could have been, might it be a faulty actuator or other relay. Would the crusie control actuator cause this even if I'm not using the cruise control?

thanks

I for some reason remember that three drive cycles (start reverse drive etc.) with no fault will extinguish the CEL, might have been a different car.

Keep your fingers crossed for a low-tech solution.

At 168K miles, if your resonator and intake manifold have never been cleaned, your problem may simply be internal gunk--especially gunk that's clogging the butterfly valves. The EGR valve dumps particulate-rich exhaust back into the intake, which builds up and restricts flow in the intake tubes (think: atherosclerosis).

You can remove and clean these yourself, although it's a time consuming and rather messy job (I know from experience). Better to take them to an engine shop and pay a few bucks for a good solvent dip or steam clean.

Also check electrical and vacuum lines/connections to the EGR valve and the butterfly valve under the manfold.

babymog is generally correct: several (3) start cycles without a recurring error can clear a CEL. But of course, the key word here is "recurring."

Is there a DIY for cleaning the resonator and intake manifold. On my old 190E
is was so easy to deal with the intake manifold. Where is this one located?
DIY write up ? Pics?

thanks

I'd love to be able to do the basics on my car. Knowledge is power.

I'll do a search, but if anyone knows please feel free to reply.

thanks again

I don't think there's a DIY just for cleaning the resonator and IM, but if you read Lightman's glow plug DIY, you'll figure out large parts of it:

http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/OM606962GlowPlug

Lightman's writeup is on a turbocharged OM606, so your pipes will be a little different to remove (easier, actually).

Did you pull the fault codes with the CEL on?

Thanks

Actually I didn't get to pull the codes while the CEL was one as I forgot the "secret handshake"/routine to access them. I assumed the data would be stored until cleared..am I wrong? Once the CEL is off the fault is erased? Arghh, I would love to know what popped up to give me an engine electronics fault.

I'll look for the glowplug write up, I think I might have browsed that one before.

thanks again

The code(s) MAY still be stored even if the CEL is out. Two ways to retrieve:

- Cheap but imperfect: Go to Autozone and borrow their OBD reader for free (they hold your drivers license while you use the device in the parking lot). The downside is that these little handheld readers can't see all the possible codes, and maybe (I don't know for sure) they might not read a code if the CEL is off.

- Perfect but expensive: Go to an MB dealer (or maybe some indies) and have them read ALL the codes with the big computer. Note, though, that some dealers will give you the readout but won't tell you what the codes mean. In that case, you can ask on this forum or subscribe to alldatadiy.com for about $25/year.

It's just a silly leak

F'ing E300! I had a fuel line leak before, asked my mech to change them all, but he changed only the bad one???? I started to small diesel whe I got out of the car for the past few days, then the dreaded start and die routine followed by 30 sec of cranking.

This AM same, stopped to top up and left the engine running, took a look under the hood and sure enough and nice drip in the engine bay! How dangerous is this? How flammable is it compared to gas?

I'd do it myself, but I have not time or tools available here! I ha an appt on Tues and he's changing the lot!

thanks again

The fuel leaks are not anywhere near as dangerous as gasoline leaks.

Always fix any fuel leaks first on the 606, once thats done tackle the remaining symptoms.

I suspect from the description of your surging problems that your IM, resonance flaps and EGR all need a good cleaning.

Resonance flaps

Where are these located. While the IM is off it can be cleaned, how about the resonance flaps?

thanks

Any pics or DIY's are greatly appreaciated.

This thread has a detail showing them half way down.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=201882

You pull the crossover pipe and the IM and clean all of em (2 manifolds, and 2 valves with flaps) at the same time.
