Transmission question E300 1996

My E300 transmission (auto) is tending to bang slightly in between the speeds from 0 to 35 mph on acceleration. Does this mean I need a new one?

What do you mean by bang? Hard shifting?

TMAllison 10-05-2007 08:55 PM

Surmising harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts?

Your's is 11 years old, have you begun upgrading the vacuum lines in it yet?

Bodgit2 10-05-2007 09:10 PM

Yes, exactly, harsh shifts 1 to 2, 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. I haven't touched any vacuum lines in it. Is that the problem?

It certainly could be. Your trans ought to be the 722.438 which is not electronically controlled like the 722.608 is, meaning it uses manual throttle position and vacuum signals to determine shift points and firmness.

start looking at hoses and see if they are cracking and splitting.

Yeah, once you're done with that and if it still shifts hard, I'd adjust the vacuum modulator on the transmission. I have mine set in the middle. I'm assuming you've checked the transmission fluid.

Fluid's OK. Will check the lines. I've not done that.

Found it with my smoke machine. Broken plastic vacuum nipple on a little vacuum electric valve under the ABS unit. I replaced the valve and the cars drives great now. Thanks for your help guys!

Good job hunting it down. Those little leaks can be hard to find.
