Primitive car = good

Having doubts about your old benz lately? Don't jump for that new car just yet. Here's something that reminded me why I keep my primitive 300CD around:

http://www.topix.net/content/trb/2337275869424300307820692127172409290399

The story is a few months old, but only today appeared in the auto section of my local rag. Can't imagine how this car owner must feel after this nonsense.

Wow....thats just scary. Thankfully MB pretty much makes all parts for their cars produced in the past 40-50 years.

no they dont either.

Some vinyl interior parts notably are impossible to obtain even from Germany.

Try to get wagon parts for an olive interior...

At first, the mechanics agreed that would solve the problem. But after further consideration, they declined because of the potential liability for jury-rigging the cooling system.
And there's another killer: The potential for lawsuit. It all boils down to willingness to take responsibility for one's actions. If I went to a mechanic asking for a non-standard fix such as directly wiring the fan to run, I would accept the fact that it may or may not work. And, that the consequences of any negative outcome would lie squarely on my shoulders, not the mechanic's.

Unfortunately, this isn't the trend which I find pretty saddening since it eventually erodes the will to explore simple and creative solutions to problems.

There is a law that says they must support any vehicle they build with parts for ten years.

After ten years it is their decision to scale back or stop production.

Have a great day.

Just imagine what would happen if there was no law.

I was under the impression that MB will always stock parts for cars and will make more if necessary.

You probably wouldn't want to pay what they'd get for that reverse-engineering.

I don't think there's any requirement for them to actually stock parts for vehicles for 10 years though. They could put them on perpetual backorder until they get enough demand to do a manufacturing run.. which'll be never.

So like.. why can't the guy get one off a junked car? Hard to believe in a country packed with cars and bad drivers, that there isn't at least one in a junkyard someplace they can get the part from.

There's many reasons I'll definately find another mercedes if anything ever happens to mine, but will never buy another Ford.. availability of spare parts is one of the smaller ones.

Not true. After some foreign manufacturer (Citroen?) left US buyers stranded when they left the market and didn't leave parts, Congress enacted a law that there must be actual parts (not backorders) support if a company is leaving the US market. That means, for example, that Daihatsu had to continue actual parts support after they left the market fifteen or so years ago.

The POS Fords I had were reliably breaking down. This was 20 years ago, and I have not owned a FORD product since then. GM is not much better, but I will say the GM stuff I had lasted longer and required less wrench time than the Ford stuff.
