Interior lights

Is there is a replacement for the instrument cluster and console lighting? Mines finally worn out.
Also, is the rear end on the 1985 300D a 2.88 or 3.07? I have a 1983 300D with a 1985 Transmission and my speedo is off 2 MPH for every 10 MPH of speed. Im considering changiong my differential if it would drop my RPM and improve high speed performance.

Your instrument cluster light may be related to the dimmer switch, a common failure. Remove cluster, and solder a jumper the leads on back, the lights should light, albeit with no dimming capability. That's all I can help with.

Stupid question time, where exactly is the dash light rheostat on a '82 240D? I looked all through the owner's manual and couldn't find anything. There is also no knob that stands out on the instrument panel that could be the dimmer. Unless its integrated into the headlight switch but I don't see how.

Edit: Oops, I think I found it. Didn't know the odometer reset doubled as the rheostat. Nevermind.

One thought -- there are LED replacements for those instrument lights behind the prisms that are much brighter. You have to put a jumper on the rheostat, though, but the results are worth it, IMHO.

thanks,

Chuck

2.88- it is the best highway driving differential for the W123.

Thanks! I may switch to the 2.88 differential. I can solder on a jumper wire across the rheostat terminals, but there is no replace ment for this? Also My shifter lever is a little sloppy. I know there is a bushing for this, but where does it go? in the in car linkage or under the car on the transmission?
