What is this part, and why does it buzz?
What is this part, and should I be concerned that it makes a loud buzzing sound and that I can feel a vibration from it when I shut off the car? This lasts about 2 minutes after shutting the car off. Markings on the black plastic read "VAC" and "EGR". The part is located in the front of the engine compartment on the passenger side. See related thread here.

It looks to be a vacuum control valve, and your over-boost solonid to the right of it. (not my era car, someone back me up)
I would check all line with a mity-vac. Are you experiencing any hard shifts?

Sometimes it shifts very smoothly, and at other times it jolts into gear.

I'm wondering about that part myself. In another thread, someone said it was a nonessential component that regulated the EGR Valve.
Mine is marked with ATM on the side of disk part. So I thought it had some bearing on the transmission.

Brian said it was okay to remove mine when I was cleaning out all that stuff. I don't have any vacuum whatsoever on the right side of the engine bay now, and all the devices that could conveniently be removed easily have been removed.
My shifts, for the record, are uniformly rough. Mityvac shows only 7.5 inches leaving the modulator (blue flying saucer on left fender) to the transmission. When I manually gave the transmission 10 inches with the mityvac, my shifts were plenty smooth. Wherever I'm losing those inches of vacuum, however, I don't think it's related to removing those components. Engine doesn't seem to care. |

The large one runs the EGR valve; the small one next to it runs the Air Recirculation Valve (ARV). Both can be removed and the lines plugged. If one or both have vacuum leaks, your transmission won't shift correctly. The ARV itself is part of the turbo casting and can be plugged but not removed; the EGR can be removed and it's hole blocked off.

The ATM port is a vent to the atmosphere. The line, at least on my car, runs through a small fuel filter looking filter and into the cabin where it just sits open. That vacuum transducer is for the EGR. The 90-91 300D has three of these; one each for the EGR, the intake butterfly valve, and the turbo wastegate. Mine buzz too when the car is shut down until the vacuum between the device being controlled and the transducer bleeds off.
