Was getting ready to do viscofan rebuild...
but when I got the clutch off, turns out the bimetal strip was missing. No wonder the thing didn't friggen' work!
Damn, what other kind of ham-fisted work has been done on my sweet, sweet, SDL?? Today I found, besides the failed fan clutch, two loose injectors, injectors which look as though they were assembled with black silicone, almost finger-tight intake manifold bolts (except for the two that are stuck in there tight! Soaking them in PB right now before I attempt any more torque on 'em). Miracle this thing ran as well as it did!! Dang, I love my Mercedes Benzs!

It's a wonder at the amount of abuse these cars can take. I keep shaking my head at some of the things I found with the SD. Tough old cars to say the least.

When I got a used fan clutch at the JY, and compared it to the fan clutch on my car, I found out that the bimetallic strips are different but it looks like the clutches are the same. I guess it's just the different strip that makes the difference in when the clutch bites, etc. One strips is thicker, one is thinner. Sorry I forgot which is which but this is for a 617.
You might also need the pin, if the strip is missing. The pin is loosely held in place by that strip.

I'm hoping to get it all buttoned back up for a weekend trip with my gal to Charleston. I'll save rebuilding this one 'till later.
