recommendation on OIL HEATER for 617 Turbo

I absolutely cannot get off the hex plug on my block...Tried EVERYTHING.

It is getting cold, and I have to park my car outside now. I was thinking about the Morroso stick on heating pad, but we all know these benzes leak dirty diesel motor oil on the oil pan so I think the oil may solubilize the glue on the heating pad. Or possibly it may be very hard to get it perfectly clean.

What do you think about this one where you can weld on a bung fitting, and then affix it that way?

The 617 lower oil pan is steel right?

i think its alluminum. but i would suggest a water heater before an oil heater... just install it in the lower hose and be done with it.

I got the KATZ lower radiator water heater, but it did not work very well. Maybe just that one was bad.

I would prefer an oil heater.

I second the lower radiator hose heater. Takes about a half hour to install and works well. Use a magnetic oil pan heater in addition if it gets real cold.

oil pan aluminum over steel

Actually the lower pan is steel and the upper pan is aluminum. I have a stick on heating pad on the block just behind the IP. It was on the engine when I got it so I do not know what make it is. It seems to work fairly well. A couple of hours and the rocker arm cover reads about 80 degrees F and the head about 90. Probably helps that it warms the IP as well.

That sounds good! I do NOT want a lower radiator hose heater. I had bad luck with two or more in the past, so I want to try the oil kind.

Just looking for a recommendation for an OIL heater. Thankx though

I have a lower hose heater, and it works ok....but this winter if we see real cold temps I'll probably add a magnetic pan heater as well.

I have the screw in block heater and a magnetic oil pan heater. I bought the oil pan heater at a local auto supply. about $25 or $30.

to me, just heating the block is great, but the oil down in the pan is ice cold. heating the oil will get it to flow quicker.

I know some of you that live back east where it get 100 below brag how your engine start in that cold. but if you could possibly plug them in, it would make them happier and cut down on wear.
also get the heater going sooner.

So the consensus is that the lower oil pan is steel, right?

I would love to get that drain plug out and put in the OE block heater, but I dont think that that will happen.

It's steel. I've used two magnetic heaters on it before I installed the lower radiator hose heater. Was not impressed with their performance overall but they probably do make the oil warm. In no way did they approach the effectiveness of the coolant heater in the lower radiator hose.

Get this one

Why oil heater? This one works better than anything and is fairly easy to install (coolant drain plug).
