my 240D has white fog lights

Not Euro style, but round white ones.

Is that original? Many I see have yellow lenses. What is the difference between the white and yellow ones?

What's the difference in what way? Effectiveness in fog?

If that's it then the way I've had it told is that some believed the yellow was "to be seen" as opposed to "seeing".

There's also a belief that it cuts down glare.

There are also arguements for both. LOL.

Yellow lenses are Fog Lights dispersing wide and shallow, useless when there's no fog.

White lenses are Driving Lights that light up road surface with directed longer reaching narrower beams. Sports car enthusiasts love em for wailing around on windey roads at night.

I think most folks prefer yellow fog lights for purely cosmetic reasons that have nothing to do with driving the car. Dont need em at all unless you live in fogbound regions. Meanwhile white driving lights are excellent for everyday use at night.

There was no cut-off point when MB offered one or another. Option was Driving Lights or Fog Lights.

The yellow ones are hard too come by these days as they dont make them anymore, something about about some "nasty ingredient in the yellow glass making process ," anyway thats what I was told when trying to get some.

Why do the fog light color fade? Is it a coating or is the pigment in the glass. On mine, one fog lamp is a darker yellow than the other and looks like crap.

Thanks, I do love using them at night, especially in our neighborhood where kids lurk in the shadows.

I wanted to know if I was missing out by not having yellow, but it sounds like I am in good shape!

They still make some selective yellow bulbs. Hella does, I ordered some Yellowstars from Susquehanna Motorsports a few months ago, or you can get some PIAA bulbs off of eBay which are yellower.

There are yellow fogs, and white fogs. The pattern of the beam is what makes it a fog light, essentially the fog light has a wide beam with a sharp cutoff on the top so that there is no light upward to reflect back into the driver's eyes and create glare.

The idea of the yellow is that the longer wavelength light would reflect less in fog and create less glare. The down side is that although there might be less light reflected back / glare, the world becomes monochromatic and it is harder to recognize things. Think about driving while looking through a black & white TV for example.

Having used both extensively in fog and snow, I prefer white. I have also worn "shooting glasses" in fog which produces the same effect as driving with yellow lights, it does improve contrast. I have used this during the day as well as driving in fog at night. White fog lights offer the best light for lighting up the shoulder and around curves, and you can always use yellow driving or shooting glasses.

Our 300D has white lenses as well...and both are cracked open by stones and full of water. Probably why the previous owner went with cheaper white ones.

I was going to say Fogs came in both but it's been said. A lot of people don't know a fog light from a Driving light.

I've always with aftermarket lights made my own. LOL. I use driving light reflectors with fog lenses and install 100 watt bulbs and have them switched to work with the highbeams. I aim them with the highbeams and add an over ride switch to get people who drive with their driving lights/fogs on all the time. LOL.

I put Hella H4 lights with twin filaments in place of my fogs on the '79 300TD.
I got the lamps off a late 80's VW, they are Euro 4.75 inch flat face. I had to dremel some metal away from the buckets as I recall to get them to fit.

The low beam "fogs" come on when the fog light is switched on (knob is pulled out you know) and the high beams are directly tied through a relay to the car's regular high beams, so in effect you get four high beams instead of one. Makes for much better visibility

My '84 300td had clear round Hella fog lights with something yellow around the bulb. I tossed 'em in the trash and replaced them with H1 high beams.

I had yellow when I bought the car. one was broken, so went to the wrecking yard and they only had clear. so have had the clear the past 10 yrs.
I rewired the lights to come on whether Iam on high or low beam, and changed them to 100 watt. much better than the 55 watt. I have a switch to turn them on or off. so now I can have them with the low or high beam. really works great on some of these dark mountain roads, or zooming across I80 through nevada in the middle of the night. they throw the light low and wide,

Charlie
