Question Advise needed please!

Good morning all.
This is my dilemma,
There are two Mercedes that I want to consider buying this week, but I need advise on what to look for in these two cars.
The first one is a 1983 300D with 200.000 km.**Quote from add..Pearl white 300d turbo diesel with 200km's.Overall good shape.New battery.No body damage**
The second one is a 1979 280E.**Quote from add...1979 Mercedes 280E,blue on blue,CLEAN,auto, gas 4 door 240.000km air cared newish tires asking 1500 OBO...
I know one is gasoline and the other diesel.
Now I have not yet seen these cars but will do this afternoon or tomorrow.
Whats your opinion fellows

Depends on the condition. I am partial to diesels, though.

It is hard to go wrong with a diesel, if it runs halfway decent and the body is not rotting away.

I would go with the diesel if it's as advertised - check it out, ask to see any books or records that he's got, drive it on a freeway to see how it goes down that road at speed.

See how they start, COLD most importantly. I bought my 300cd, and when i looked at it the owner had warmed it up to hide the extremely poor cold start of the car. See how they idle under load too, more important on the gasser, a rough idle can be signs of problems with the injection system. Last thing, check the trans fluid, most often neglected by owners, make sure it is red, not black or orange as they can be signs of high temps or way past change intervals.

not that it matters much on a diesel, but find out which ODO reading they are advertising. 200thousand Miles, or 200,000Kilometers are quite different. 200KM's is never driven...
look for rust in the floor, the frame, the jack points, the trunk wells, and the front and rear hinge areas. look at the battery tray, if it's badly rusted away, so will be the fender below... pay attention to shift ability, and handling, pay attention to COLD start ability, and look at blowby.

I bought my CD with 83k (k meaning thousand) miles on the clock, best vehicular decision I ever made. Even 200k miles is not bad. The SD has 194k miles, going strong. Km usually means kilometers, that would equal 134k miles, however I don't know how many ODO's read in km.

As mentioned earlier, condition is a big deal. A rough start up could be glow plugs, easy replacement. If hard starting cold, do a check on the GP's with an ohm meter. Check for voltage too.

You'll get a more accurate reading of compression after a valve adjustment.

I'm a diesel head, good luck, and happy hunting!

Condition maintenance history & lack of rust most important

The 280E is rarer and quicker, but the fuel injection on them is sometimes troublesome.

The diesels virtues and faults are well known to most, here, but their longevity is absolutely legendary and unparallelled.

They are enough alike that documented maintenance, overall mechanical and cosmetic condition, and most importantly of all - ESPECIALLY in Canada, absence of rust should tip the scales in favor of one over the other.

Look under the carpets, in the trunk, the rocker panels and jack points, around the bumpers, underneath, in the wheel wells and wheel arches, the cowl, everywhere you can.

I would even take them through a carwash and them check the interior and trunk for leaks right afterward.

Parts and service in Canada for them may be more difficlut to obtain than in most parts of the USA.

Well Its done guy's.
I just purchased the 1983 300D Turbo Diesel.
The car was sitting in a back yard garage and didn't start for almost a full year.I reconnected the battery and sat in the car, turn the ignition and waited a few moments then she started with out hesitation.Very little smoke no vibration from the engine, the vehicle has 210,000 original Kilometers.I verified all the paper work IE:Air Care millage it all adds up perfectly to the millage shown. So in miles it has a little more then 120,000 miles on it.
The person selling this car is the second owner, his mother bought this car brand new back in 1983,i have all of the original paper work all the maintenance done on it until 2002,all at a Mercedes Benz dealership.
I think I can say I'm pretty damn proud!
And the reason hes selling it?
Needs more room in his garage to store his sisters furniture...Can you believe that!

Unhappy Shes home...BUT!

Hey all.
Well the 300D 1983 is finally home.
A few things are happening though.
First of all, while i was driving on the freeway home she was somewhat hesitant to pick up speed, almost like a lack of power no more then 80kph,then she slowed down all by her self to a point that she HAD no power at all could barely advance.I pulled over and let it rest a bit and the engine was shaking allot so i let it be and about 15 minutes later she took off again and went up to about 50kmp...same thing again this went on for about an hour,I got fed up and called a towing, got her home was able to start the engine that went well got her up on stands and prepare to do an engine oil change,a transmission service on it,also replaced the white flaps under the vacuum box that sits on the valve cover AKA Transmission Vacuum Valve Lever kit.
When that was all done i added transmission fluid and started the engine,it started but not for long it started shaking and then stopped, tried again same thing..Now i took some pictures of the vacuum hoses and I want you to tell me if they look well at there place. The car has 212.000 km its a 300D 1983 I would realy like someone to help me out here.
One more thing...Can diesel fuel go bad? This car has been sitting in a garage for over two years ,and they would start it every other month....
