240D brakes: how hard of a job? And other questions.

Can someone advise me on how hard it is to replace the pads on my 240D.
-Do I need to bleed the brakes when finished?
-Are there steps on how to change pads on a 240D?
-Anything I should look out for?
-Should I change the rear brakes also?
-Are those drum brakes or disc brakes also?

Other questions:
-Odometer doesn't work, how hard is it to remove the dash? I figure that's where I'll have to start.
-Dash lights don't work either.
-No AM reception on the factory radio. Any clue on this one?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Regards,
Kurt

ooooh fun.
front and rear disk brakes, with rear drums for e-brake only under the rotor...
pads are simple pull two pins pry one side of caliper piston back, put in new pad, pry other piston back put in other new pad, put spring/clip, pin back in, repeat 3 more times. if the fluid has not been flushed to your knowledge, flush it too, pop off the resivoir cap, empty as much as you can, fill with fresh fluid, open furthest bleed screw, allow crap to drain out, keep MC full of fluid. gravity will usually drain it for you.

If you have basic tools and average mechanical abilities brakes are one of the easier repairs. The DIY Links "tab" on the top of the screen will offer you a wealth of information.
-Do I need to bleed the brakes when finished?
Yes
-Are there steps on how to change pads on a 240D?
DIY TAB
-Anything I should look out for?
Look at your discs for wear they are not expensive.
-Should I change the rear brakes also?
If they need to be replaced yes
-Are those drum brakes or disc brakes also?
Disc with drum brakes on the parking brake

Other questions:
-Odometer doesn't work, how hard is it to remove the dash? I figure that's where I'll have to start.
Cluster removal is easy - there are several good reads (with pics) for fixing odo. Do a search.
-Dash lights don't work either.
Probably the rheostat very common failure if not replace bulbs
-No AM reception on the factory radio. Any clue on this one?
Buy a new radio yours is twenty six years old

These are common problems addressed many times here. You need too remove the instrument cluster not the dash and you will be able too fix these things. When removing the cluster be sure and get all the slack out of the spedo cable by removing the bracket in the engine compartment first.

Look here for info on the Speedo Repair. Brakes are relatively easy. I'd look at the rubber brake hoses. They probably need to be replaced. Any cracks in them or if they look stiff. They are about $10 each. I'd probably flush the brake fluid with new stuff. Brake fluid should be changes every 3 years, maybe sooner.

Thumbs up

If you have the original brake hoses, it is time to replace them. I had two of them go out last year before I decided to replace all four of them, and I'll tell you, that when you hit your brakes and they go all the way to the floor, it ain't fun!
Brake hoses are easy to install and while you're flushing out the old crap out of your brake system, you might as well install new hoses and be confident of having the best brakes in town!

If you do the hoses, its a good idea to get the proper wrench, you dont want too round off the fitting.

If you decide against replacing the rubber lines, or exchanging the old probably water logged fluid, you do not need to bleed.

I was told by a mechanic friend to bevel the edges if the new pads and they wont sqeek, I do it with a wood rasp and they dont.

Also consider... the more expansive pads are harder and last longer. I would rather replace cheap ones more often and not rotors so often.
