bad vibration question

My 96 E300 D is making a massive vibrating sound when I put the car in reverse, or when I start to slow coming to a stop sign or something like that. It seems to have gotten louder with the colder weather. It sounds like a rumbling more than anything, is this the sound of the spring mounts or motor mounts? I havent had a chance to get them checked out yet.

Motor mounts. Colder weather = less flexible rubber. Pretty easy job to do.

Look at the tops of the mounts with a bright light and look for cracks or measure them from below. New they should measure 17mm from top most rim down to next lower rim. At 13mm they are considered to be collapased. Use a bolt head or socket whose OD is 17mm (= my 10mm) as a feeler gauge to measure with.
