Now have my first 81 300D, third diesel tho (84 rabbit 268k, 2k bettle TDI). I'm trying to find out what the oil pressure should indicate on an idle verse revved up? My first vw smoked like hell, as does this 300, I realize this will be hard to answer, but, how much smoke is normal? any advise/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Idle pressure should be around 1.5bar at idle and it should pin the needle something over 12-1500rpm when hot. As for the smoke technically a turbo charged engine should not smoke at all but since these engines are waste gated a noticeable amount of smoke is normal. A black cloud is not normal. Although, the old VW's could put out a cloud so thick the sun would disappear.
