83 turbodiesel stick shift

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/pts/464041852.html

It is less than a mile from my house so I went to look at it. It is a 1983 240 D with a 4 speed with a 1985 turbo 617 transplanted. It is rust free with very clean interior. Advertised as a 86 engine but is clearly an 85.

What it needs:
trunk lid, Back window, Hood, Grill, Headlight assemblies, core support, Radiator, AC condenser, and possibly the front fenders. Left taillight is cracked.

Missing: Heater controls, power window switches, etc in center console as well as the panel.

The door panels are in the trunk and look complete and clean. The car is light blue with blue clean interior.

I actually have everything it needs on my parts car except the interior pieces.
I dont know if I need another project like this though.

The good:
NO RUST, clean interior, manual trans, michelin tires.
Sorry no pics, i didnt bring my camera.

Hard to go too far wrong if it runs. The parts alone are worth that.

Before jumping on this project, is there any way to start and hear/feel the engine run, to try and get an idea if the 300D flywheel-clutch conversion was properly balanced, or possibly other issues like oil pressure?
Unfortunately, without a radiator, you won't be able to run it very long.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I would be more worried about the driveshaft chop than anything else.

Sure, Just start it and slowly rev it and feel for any vibrations. My FW was match balanced and I still have a bit of vibration, it would be hard to miss if it was not balanced at all.
