Can the oil pan be swapped endwise on 617s?

I am toying with the idea of attempting to put an extra 617 into my 46 dodge, and it will need to become a rear sump oil system. Also I have never had the oil pan off, other than the lower sump which was before I dreamed up this idea... could the whole oil pan be swapped front to back, if a remote pickup was fabricated?

No. If you need a rear sump go with a Cummins 4BT. FWIW the flat head 6 in my '49 Dodge pickup has a front mounted sump....a 617 should fit in there nicely.

No, it can't be swapped. The oil pump hangs low into the sump.

That is just what I was hoping for... Where is the front axle relitive to the sump on your '49? In the case on the power wagon, it appears as if the axle will come up close to the oil pan when loaded..... But I have also heard that folks have put 360's in them and I believe the 360 V8 has a front sump...

You can always modify the oil pan for clearance. The lower pan is sheet metal and can be welded. Just remove as little as possible and make sure it does not obstruct the pickup tube.

On the '49 the axel is behind the lower sump.

Is the pickup 4wd?

The large axle of the power wagon may make a more difficult fit.

Yes it is.. I am now wondering if some type of remote P/U could be built or external type set up.. Don't Big Block Mopars have an external line that goes from the oil pump P/U back to the oil pump? I guess I am thinking that If the Oil sump can go farther forward, it will be out of the way if the axle comes up to the frame durring a bump..

A 4.3 Cummins would be the smart thing to do.. but I rather think this swap would be more interesting.. and having 5.83s in the rear end makes the Cummins a bit limited in it's RPM.. course it doesn't need to spin.. but that is beside the point..
