Opinions on Head Gasket repair.....
Saw a small ad in a North Carolina newspaper regarding a Head Gasket Repair. Have not tried it, nor do I have a head gasket problem at this time, but I thought it would be of interest with a few posters on this board.

Maybe we should all drain the coolant on our cars so we can try it to see if it works

On a more modern car, I don't think I'd trust it... and I've never fallen for many snake oil tricks... but I think I'd give that a shot on the Benz if I ever had to before I'd pay the astronomical (compared to what we can afford to throw at a 21 year old car, Benz or not) cost of tearing it down to head gasket level.

Due to lack of $s and a need to get my vehicle going I have reused not repaired the head gasket on 3 vehicles over the last 35 years.
My old Chevy pickup truck with a 235 inline 6. I took that old brown permatex and carefully dabbed it around all of the oil and water holes on the gasket. The gasket type was laminated (2 copper sheets with asbestos sandwiched in-between) Dodge 177 cubic inch slant 6 inline engine. The gasket on this one was a stamped piece of sheet metal with raised areas to provide a seal. I sprayed it with several coats of Copper Kote gasket adhesive. Letting each coat dry completely The last one is still on the car and in use today was installed in 1994. Volvo 244GL D24 diesel inline 6 cylinder. It has a copper laminated head gasket ($50 new) similar to the 235 Chevy gasket. I again gave it the Copper Kote spray gasket adhesive treatment the same as I had done with the Dodge head gasket. In all 3 cases I had no problems at all. I was also extremely careful to clean and degrease the head and the block and make sure there was sealant around the oil and coolant holes. Copper Kote and similar products have flakes of copper suspended in them which helps to seal and the copper resist heat and fills in gaps. I took the chance because at the time I did not have money. Now I would just buy a new one. Don't do it if you don't have to! Added- On diesel engines with cylinder liners the gasket "crush" on top of the liner is partly responsible for keeping the liner in place. Reusing a head gasket with one of these egines could cause damage. Last edited by Diesel911; 11-06-2007 at 05:35 PM. Reason: add info |
