240D Engine Replacement Question
Foolishly or not, I bought a great condition 82 240D with no engine or transmission (a high school auto class took the engine and auto transmission out) . I've found another 240D wrecked with a good engine and I have a manual 4-speed from an 80 300D. My question is: I've heard that there's an issue with the A/C compressor not fitting in the engine bay of an '82 from prior years of w123 240Ds. Will any year w123 240D engine and A/C stuff fit my 82?

I believe if you go with a mid year 1979 or earlier engine the A/C was rigged for a York compressor as opposed to the R4.

Thank you, do you know how to recognize the difference between an R4 unit and a York compressor?

Quote:
The R4 is on the front bottom drivers side, and the York is a giant compressor on front top passenger side.

The earlier york style of compressor is a piston design versus the rotary newer type. So it looks quite different as well compared to most compressors you see on cars today. I believe the york is more expensive as well.

I will check for a smaller R4 unit on the driver's side, not the "giant" one on the passenger's, sounds like a big difference. Thanks for the responses, A/C is rather important in Tucson, Arizona.

May as well put a turbo 617 in there. If you lived any place other than AZ I would tell you to just bag the AC.

I know that feeling. It is just so much easier to go back with the same type of engine. Keeps you from having to mess with the driveshaft and shifter linkage lengths, exhaust situation, glow plug wiring, etc.....
Plus, driving a 240 is an attitude all to itself......
