1985 300td fuel filter details

i changed my spin on fuel filter and added a clear sight glass after the filter. couple days later ( after I threw away the filter i had removed ) i noticed a ton of bubbles coming out of the filter housing through the sight glass. this may have been happening since before i changed the filter and added the sight glass because the car runs ok. but there should not be this much air in the lines. my question is : on my 1978 300d on the big bolt that the fuel filter spins onto there is a copper washer between the bolt head and the top of the filter housing, there is no washer on the 85, but they are significantly different bolts, should there be a washer there ? maybe thats where the air is getting puled in at. i guess it could be a bad fiter but that seems unlikely. i know the air is coming in at the fiter housing b/c i jumped/bypassed it and no bubbles. what about that washer ? my hanes does not have any diagrams of the assembley

Dont know about a washer, I'll check tomorrow when I replace my fuel filter on my 85. There is a rubber O-ring, between the fuel filter and the filter head. Good luck.

The older version had an o-ring and a copper washer. The later version had 2 o-rings, which were different sizes. I don't know what year it was changed. Rumor has it that there may have been a 3rd version.

Edit: One of my old posts has the part numbers. You should be able to find it using the search function.

Yeah, no crush washers on anything '83 and newer I've owned. The O rings go into grooves on the bolt itself, right?

My 85 300D has the 2 O-Rings and the Copper washer.
I just changed the filter last week, the new filter did not come with new rings or washers so I just put it togeather as it was, BUT it leaked fuel from around the old washer. (Apparently the factory filters come with the proper bits, but not the cheap one I tried...) Pretty much a little squirt of fuel on each cylinder firing. No amount of tightening and swearing would make it stop.
Needless to say it had to sit for a couple days until I could get to the AutoZoo and get a ring and washer assortment to find the proper size.

Replaced the o-rings and copper washer and all was good.

What kind of sight glass you using? Is it cheap? Some WVO people were using cheap sight glasses to track down leaks in their veggie systems and it turned out the leaks they were seeing were coming from the fitting on the sight glass itself.

Sorry to mislead, on my 240, I used a composite washer from the hardware store.
The pic is a filter I bought from a site, you can see it comes with the crush washer that neither of my current cars use.

i learned some stuff today...from mb dealer
2 different types of bolts that the fuel filters spin onto, one has a small o-ring and a copper washer the 2nd has 2 o-rings and no copper washer, i saw the diagrams. now that said, and having replaced both orings and trying a new fuel filter, I AM STILL SUCKING TONS OF AIR, what I have figured out after much frustrating troubleshooting is that if I run some tube from a can of diesel to the supply on the fiter assy, no more bubbles, so its something to do with the tank, clogged breather/vent or is there some kind of screen on the supply that coud be clogged with 25 yrs woth of crud from the bottom of the tank?

Your air leak is from somewhere before, as you've found out, check all lines and connections. A clogged tank screen, or filter for that matter, would result in no fuel reaching the engine, vs an air leak.
I'm close by, PM me if you'd like.

if i go from the metal supply in the engine bay to the sight glass to the ip = no air,...
if i go from a gas can to the filter to the sight glass to the ip = no air bubbles,...
if i go from metal tank supply line to filter to glass to ip = tons of air bubbles,...
the only thing i could figure was a vent or screen blockage that creating extra suction pressure from the tank that caused the filter to draw in air .?.?.?.
Is there a vent? where is it ?

My bolt on the filter looked just like the one pictured. But it also had a copper washer. The bolt just would not seal without it. I tried. Others on the forum have not had this problem and do not have the washer... FWIW. Probably would not hurt to try it.

There is a vent. In the left wheel well on some models. Easiest test for a plugged vent is removing the fuel cap and seeing if the problem goes away. Could also be a plugged tank screen causing a high draw on the rest of the lines pulling in some air.
