1983 300D Turbo project

Just thought i would start a thread about a recent project i started: 1983 300D turbo

I picked it up for $450 from some guy selling because of his wifey wanting him to clean out his yard haha..

Its got 277k miles. It runs ok, but it needs a valve adjustment, and smokes a little too. The transmission will not shift out of 2nd either. no rust at all, perfect project car to me heheh

First I did a vacuum simplification, disable egr and boost limiter:

replaced the filter assy, cleaned up the engine bay a little:

about the transmission problems.. i tried adjusting the bowden cable and VCV, disable kickdown switch, but whenever it tries to shift to 3rd, it goes to 1st. I changed the fluid, and found a LOT of metal sludge and a few small bits of metal in the pan, so it seems teh clutch packs are completely shot. im going to order a rebuild kit and try fixing it myself

I started pulling the tranny yesterday:

to be continued

Hey I like that air filter setup. Did you make it and what is it, or where can I get one?

Don't bother. It's an inefficient hot air intake.

I am 99% sure that the car is NOT jacked up properly. The jack stands are not in the right place!!!

That spot is fine for stands. All that intake does is give you more noise, no actual gains.

That looks a little bit like a KM air filter set up. Is it?

yeah its an old k&n i used to have on my rx-7. i plan to make a heat shield for it like this:

and make a hole into the fenderwell. with a proper shield, there should be power gains (with proper IP adjustment).. the k&n intake diameter is huge compared to stock

so where are the correct jack points?

Why? You will see NO performance gain.

Checked/adusted valves, Chain stretch, Timing, Banjo bolt???

Making it run right stock will make you happier in the long run.

hmm im no diesel expert, but pretty much for any internal combustion engine: more airflow = more power (provided the right air/fuel ratio)

I totally agree. but i want to get it actually driveable (transmission work) before putting all that work in. the intake/vacuum simplifications were easy to do, took all of an hour. plus it cleaned up the engine bay, elimiates a few areas for vacuum leaks, and makes it easier to work on

There is no performance gain at all. The stock air filter can flow more CFM than the engine can use with a T3 turbo and it is already a true cold air intake. All a K&N will do is reduce filtering efficiency and flow more dirt, not air.

The engine is completely mechanical, extra airflow alone will not increase power. As I said before, the stock air filter has enough CFM flow capacity than the engine can ever flow with the stock turbo.
