clunking in front end over small bumps
Everyone-
I have a clunking going on when going over repetitious small lumps, such as the ones that form on city streets, and manhole recesses. It's coming from the front end. I have a feeling it's guide rod time. Car does not show uneven tire wear, and drives fine otherwise. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

When I bought my 82 300D it had the same issue. Took me a while to track it down, but it was the bottom front shock mount that was loose - not the shock onto the mount, but the mount itself. Have some one really torque on the front of your car and bounce it up and down as violently as they can, that's what it took for me to find it.

When I was having problems with noise in the front end, I ended up finding that my lower ball joint was about to fall apart. Easiest way to locate that is to just get the car up off the tires, and look under there while having someone shake the tire in and out, back and forth, and up/down.
I hope it's not this, on your car, but better to catch it early, than to have it possibly fall apart on a large bump!

Just a note to help you eliminate possible clunks like yours. I believed the clunking in my front end was a badly worn guide rod on the passenger side, which I replaced. However the clunking continued, disappointed, and I haven't looked further. I'll check the bottom shock mount indicated by mttc and look here for further ideas from members for possible clunking location fixes in the front.

Mines doing that right now. The shocks are shot and 1 is leaking, I'm hoping thats the klunk.

I had the same noise on my td. It was the bottom shock mounts. This is remedied only with a new shock since these bushings are not replaceable. The bushing in mine had shrunk and turned to plastic and was rattling it's ass off over bumps.

Check The Left Front Guide Rod At Rear, And Center The Top Of Shock New Rubber Bushing What A New Car, No More Clunking Over Small Road Bumps.
