Engine cleaning, painting and metal polishing - Pics

About 3 weeks ago I began to do some work on our wagon. The initial plan was to replace the valve stem seals, valve springs and rebuild the turbo. Once apart and while waiting for various parts to show up, I decide our classy gal's ("Jackie-O") engine was looking a bit filthy. I began to cleanup the engine and bay. Not completed, but here are some pics.

Polished to chrome like appearance the valve cover, EGR, ALDA, throttle linkage and plates and wastegate. Painted exhaust parts and wire brushed turbo, intake injectors and injector lines.

Lot of work, but spread it out over time a couple of hours per day.

Our family loves her, she deserves it.

what kind of paint did you use on the exhaust? ceramic I hope. it looks pretty good, now if the a/c works, put a nice thick insulation line over the metal line that crosses in front of your valve cover. your compressor will thank you.

Ditto. The paint will flake off from the heat unless its a very high temperature paint. Even then, that kind of paint requires a specific bake-in procedure for it to set.

Looks nice though!

I have been thinking of doing that to my recently-acquired 300TD. Yours looks great! What an inspiration. Thanks for posting the pictures.

I wonder how long the parts will retain that shine? Doesn't aluminum tend to get cloudy from oxidation?

Years ago when I was building choppers and before we chromed aluminum, I polished parts before or after each ride with Mothers. Being that the engine of choice back then was a pan-head, I got use to oil being everywhere. (it pumped crankcase oil onto the drive chain by design)

I assume the same will hold true for the MB parts and therefore about every week or two it will get a quick rub. Price to be paid to make her shine. I do think when I am done, maintaining the engine bay clean will be easier than getting it clean the first time.

That work looks very nice. Too bad W123 engine compartments are so cluttered and ugly by nature.

I used an air grinder, electric drill and electric polisher using various buffing wheels and Rouge and Tripoli compounds. Topped it off with Mothers for aluminum.

Thanks to all for appreciating the effort. Something tells me once Jackie talks with Aristotle, I will be doing the SD.

Read the directions on the can. It needs a specific baking time and temperature before it will set.
