Brake pushing back
Hi,
I just started up my 82 300d after two years of sitting. Driving it around the yard, everything runs pretty well, except that the brake pedal is pumping back at me. Rust on the disc? Hard to imagine a warped disc, given that it's just been sitting. I'm also curious about how hard these calipers are to rebuild. I've done quite a few Girling calipers and they're not too bad if you have a drill press to turn the hone, and a lathe to chuck the pistons in. I'm curious what kind of luck people have had rebuilding the ATE's from the front of a 300d. Those bolts holding the two halves together look like trouble. Thanks for any comments. Also, I've noticed comments in other threads that a place called "O'Reilly" has rebuilt calipers for $58. Where are they? Do they ship? Thanks SEO |

Hi, is it a single push back shortly after pressing the pedal or a series of pushes? If it's a single, I'd say it's something to do with the brake booster bleeding off vacuum. If it's a series, I'd guess it probably has to do with the car sitting for 2 years. I'm thinking that the normal slop that's built into the calipers to accomodate movement of the disk is now frozen up and the piston is getting all the motion and transmitting it back to your foot. I'd pull the calipers, work all the sliding surfaces free and lightly lubricate them.

It's not your calipers....

I've had both good and bad luck getting a rotor to brake smoothly when dealing with a car that has been sitting....... Jim
