80 300SD differential

I am tossing around the idea of swapping my 3.07 diff with a 2.88 out of a newer diesel or maybe even a 2.47 out of one of the V8's. I am not concerned about acceleration, I am considering fuel economy and noise redux. a higher top end would be a plus as well. my question is has anyone ever done this, and if so what were the results in speed/rpm difference?

right now I am running about 70mph/3.3krpm
verdict is still out on MPG due to recent fuel leak location and fix, but it was getting 23-25 mpg before.

best thing I ever did on an '83 300D was to swap a 2.88 into it. Its like MB should have put that ratio in turboodiesels from the start
there are many posts on the subject, here's one thread: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=200417

I've got an 85TD, presumably with the 2.88 and I just bought a 79 SD presumably with the 3.07. I thought I'd still prefer the TD to the SD based on the gear ratio. Althought I've only owned the SD a couple of weeks, that hasn't been the case. Since I live in Denver, I drive a lot of mountain grades and my initial impression is that the 3.07 is better for doing that.

I would like to swap one in also, as I want better mpg's next summer when I am doing a lot of highway driving. I also don't care that much about acceleration, acceleration is expensive.

Anyone have a 2.88 around that they will sell? I am very interested....

Maybe. It's in a 85 SD parts car that I will dismantle someday.

I have a 2.47 in storage I could be talked out of for the right price.

You dont want a 2.47 unless you live in florida and never plan on leaving the state. 2.88 is what I have and its a big of enough difference over the 3.07.

Yeah I am going to wait for a 2.88.....I still want *some* acceleration.
