The Green Car of the Year is... a Full-Size SUV!
http://money.cnn.com/2007/11/15/autos/green_car/index.htm?cnn=yes
It gets 30% better mileage than an equivalent vehicle, resulting in 21 MPG in the city! Amazing! Sure, the mileage isn't bad for such a big vehicle, but green car of the year? That's just pathetic.

Does anyone know the cost of recharging that $hitbox every night?
Sure, you save some coin on the gasoline.........but, how much shows up on the monthly electric bill? |

...and therefore, just how green is it...really?

I don't think this is a plug-in hybrid. Just a normal, recharge-as-you-brake hybrid.

I'd hate to drive a hybrid... but I'd buy one just to score another yahoo for the SUV crowd. That's... I think it's fantastic. Proof that not ALL SUV's have to be the end of the world.
Yes, traditional SUVs aren't the best for economy... but still. They've invented an excuse not to eradicate the loathsome SUV entirely... which as far as I'm concerned is encouraging news. |

I bet it does it by running on half the cylinders most of the time too.....that 6.0 liter engine is a gas consuming vortex. My (future) relatives have one, and they get about 6-7mpg pulling their trailer with it, and 12 when not pulling anything. And they drive all the way to and from florida every year with it. They use just a little over 200 gallons of gas each way. Not to mention they do all their driving in Florida for 3.5 months with the truck also.
Chevy 2500HD w/6.0 liter V8 I bet that hybrid SUV doesn't get anywhere near that mileage when pulling something. Probably drops right back to equal (or even below) mpg figures of the normal 6.0 liter.

The main problem with hybrids is the financial and environmental cost of replacing the batteries when they go out, not to mention the initial higher purchase price and added complexity of the vehicle. Diesel engines have their own issues, but they're just much more practical, especially in a big vehicle like this.

The batteries are a huge issue....massive amount of pollution and energy used in their production/disposal.

I'm just afraid this whole thing is only gonna reinforce the image that hybrid = green, even if it's a 3-ton tank.

I can't imagine trying to tow something with a hybrid, they're not usually associated with high torque figures

They have great low-end torque, until the battery needs recharging that is, which when going uphill happens pretty soon.

Sure they are. Electric motors are very torquey. The lil electric motor in the prius puts out like 250 ft-lbs at 0 RPM.

I think just about every small car in existence is greener than any SUV ever could be.

True, that. But the American consumer does not want to compromise. They want power, roominess, automatic transmission, high mpg, they want good visibility but want the car to look sleek, they want to sit up high and ride well but have the vehicle handle well, they want 18" rims and a soft ride.
