Good News and Bad News

First the bad news:

Wife’s little 300D set me back $2287 for the new/rebuilt transmission and it was done by someone who seems to take pride in his work and knew what he was doing. But hey in today’s money that is just four car payments for the average new car. I now have $6000 in her car and she needs to drive it 2 more years before we sell it and buy another car. I will hand down the E320 CDI to her. Most likely I will get a R320 CDI, will try to find a off lease '07 or 08 model to save a few bucks if I can.

Now for the good news:

The last 3 fill ups for the CDI has averaged 26 mpg in local city driving. I have averaged between 495 to 500 miles on the three tanks, with fill ups running 18.3 to 18.7 gallons each time. Needless to say I am pleased as can be with the mileage since I do not drive it granny fashion for good mileage. A couple of friends who ride with me regularly say if they were to drive the car they would probably get 3 to 4 mpg better then I do in town.

Whatever you do, please don't buy an R class. Go for an ML320CDI.

Fixed the dollar amount for the transmission repair it was $2287 for the job.

The thing is I don't want an SUV, I want a station wagon or van with AWD and a diesel. R320 CDI fit the bill. I have sat in one (gasser) and it had excellent head and hip room for this wide load old fart.

I would really like a E320 CDI wagon in AWD, but I am not moving to Europe.

It's a minivan, yes. But the best looking minivan that I've ever seen.

I had a rental Dodge minivan for two months late last year (at a cost of over 3 grand) and it was pretty nice to have the room. It was either a minivan or SUV, and between the two, I'll take the minivan any day.

Hey man lighten up and think about how handy they are for some people, just remember some people feel the same about diesels, SUV's and politicians.

ML320 may be too tall for garage, not enough interior room, lower mileage, and I don't like the look of them anyway.

Talking 6 week report on tranny repair.

Well I am happy to report all is well with the tranny rebuild, it is working flawlessly.

One nice thing is the MPG's have jump dramatically from 20-22 range to 25-26 range in town.

Wonder what the new injector nozzles & GP's will do for the car. That's if I can get them in this weekend.

I got new springs for the injectors and will replace them while I got the injectors out. Wish I could pop test them, because even the shims are available from MB. Maybe I can find some place to do them for me before summer.

glad to hear all's well.

on the injectors, I wouldn't replace nozzles and tips w/ out pop testing them. Last set I brought in tested fine, and they wouldn't even take my money. I bet you can find a decent diesel shop to test/ set them. they probably have shims on hand. you could do the pre- assy, or just bring the injectors, nozzles and springs.

Sorry to say that when I checked around the nearest shop I could find that would do them was in Memphis and required them removed from the car. I just happen to be 150 to 175 miles from any major metro area which makes for a lot of problems when doing something like this. Another problem I have is this is a primary car, we don't have another car for her to drive while this car is down a week. Also I am having to have the work done by a friend with his own shop, and he would rather I not have the car sitting in his shop for a week just taking up space. And I can't blame him for that, I would be the same way if it were my shop. I have arthritis in hands and back real bad, it was painful for me just to change GP relay last night.

All that aside I doubt the spray pattern or duration would be as bad or worse then it currently is after 193,xxx miles. Most likely it will actually improve from the new nozzles and springs. We will see what happens after the work is done. I will report it here as to effect on the car, start-up, idle, acceleration, and mileage.
