I'm new to MB and Diesels. Where to start?

Hey all, I'm new to MB and diesels. I just bought an 82 300 CD and was wondering if I should and where to get a shop manual. I have the parts catalog, "Catalog K", that originally came with the car but that doesn't really illuminate the functions of parts.

I guess I don't really know what I'm asking other than I'd appreciate any advice on how to better educate myself on my Mercedes Benz diesel. Oh, and where do I get those Euro headlights?

Thanks, Bill

Congratulations. now get a digital camera and learn how to post some pictures of your new baby!!!

A 300CD is as good a start as you can ask for!!

There is a search tab here and anything you have questions on you can enter a search for...........also read the DIY links on this forum too.

Buy any parts from Phil at Fastlane here too. And Euro lights are on Ebay, the PARTS forum here, or sometimes C- list. I picked up a set of Katmac Euros for my 190E and am very happy with the way they lookand like having a new pair of Euro look lights vs a used pair that may or may not need repairs when you finally get them.

ANy questions about the CD please ask away........

I'll post some pictures when I get her back from the body shop. I'm having new rear quarter panels and rear wheel wells welded in and the rear frame rail repaired. There is rust in the bottom of the doors and some on the front fenders but I have plenty of time to replace those. The floors, trunk, hood, & engine compartment are all rust free.

I also have an inch thick file of service invoices from the previous owner. She really kept her up mechanically. It did sit on the lot for about a year though before I found her.

I guess what I really like to know is how to fix the speedo. The tach works, after I tightened the sending unit. The odometer and trip odo work but the speedo won't budge. Is there a sending unit, a speed sensor, or a cable I could replace? Do I have to replace the instrument cluster? The MB service manager said it would cost $1900 to get a new cluster installed. I'd like to fix the one I have.

How do I know if I have a vacuum leak? I acidentaly broke the passenger side interior door lock, the black plastic piece, when i went to lock the door. It also shifts hard into 2nd.

And I'd like to know what kind of acceleration I should have from a dead stop. I have to put the pedal to the floor to get her moving. Then it shifts hard into 2nd and after I regain rpms I'm off to the races. It's got great passing acceleration and doesn't have a problem maintaining highway speeds, it just takes awhile to get there.

I guess that's enough for know. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

-Bill

Yikes.

If you are taking your Benz to an MB dealer for servicing please find a nice competant independent old German guy in your city somehow.

I think I just paid my indie 100. for a working used cluster including installation.

I don't know how to fix the speedo, but a new cable may be alll you need.

There is a forum for shops here too............

Shifts are controlled by vacuum. There are a number of good threads on that topic. You'll need to purchase a Mity Vac to trace down vacuum leaks. Lots of people think that ownership of a MityVac should be a prerequisite to posting on the diesel discussion.
Your speedo cable is good if your odometer is working. You should be able to purchase an instrument cluster at a pick n pull for about $10. Takes about an hour or so to install. Do it on your own, then treat yourself to an $1890 dinner as a reward. Don't know if the speedo itself can be repaired. I'm sure others do.
You should feel the turbo kick in around 22-2300rpm's. Do a search on banjo bolt. Your boost control line could be plugged limiting the amount of fuel that is increased as the turbo spools up.

1900? wow, any pick and pull and you can get an 82+ cluster for around 50.00... you will mostlikely need a new speedo. the odo and speedo are both driven from the same cable. it's possible that your needle is just stuck, pulling the cluster is super easy. all you need is a phillips screwdriver, a 10mm open end wrench, and thin arms... pull the drivers kick panel, with the phillips screwdriver, shine a flashlight up there, and find the silver speedo cable and unthread it with your thin hands... once it's out, pop the cluster out a bit, and disconnect the power cable from the back of the oil/gas/temp gauge, and the speedo too. then unthread the oil line with the 10mm, then pop the last few wires off the back and slide the cluster out the passenger's side of the steering wheel.
now go get another one, and take the best of both and make a good cluster.
glad a loving owner got the car before it deteriorated away.
and Welcome to the forum!

As good as it gets on repairing your speedometer. Once you get to the site look around on "Diesel Giant" a lot of good information. Congratulations on getting your car, Search here and you will find that you can do most of your repairs.

Do I have to replace the instrument cluster? The MB service manager said it would cost $1900 to get a new cluster installed. Way over priced, just to r'n'r. I'd like to fix the one I have. Sounds like a gear wheel or two, do a search.

And I'd like to know what kind of acceleration I should have from a dead stop. I have to put the pedal to the floor to get her moving. Diesels are slow, but that doesn't sound right. Then it shifts hard into 2nd and after I regain rpms I'm off to the races. Vac problem, as kerry mentioned. It's got great passing acceleration and doesn't have a problem maintaining highway speeds, it just takes awhile to get there.

I guess that's enough for know. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello all. I'm also new to MB and diesels and would like to piggyback on this thread. Just bought an '87 300 SDL (904U - midnight blue) a week ago and I'm loving it.

It has 211K but I'm starting to believe it may be less than that. A 60 mile drive registered as 75 miles on the odometer. The speedometer is working but only after the speed reaches approx 20 mph. At 60-65 mph, rpm is at 2500. What could be causing the odometer to be fast? Could the odometer not be the original?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
