Go'na burn car diesel in my home boiler

Just paid $3.59/gal for #2 heating oil in central Jersey. And that's not the "stranger" price, I'm a regular signed up customer. I can buy the same road taxed stuff at a nearby station for 30 cents less. When did heating oil become more expensive than road fuel? Something is very wrong.

You're right, something is odd with that, as road fuel has about 45 cents of taxes applied to each gallon, heating oil does not. Very odd.

oh, come on, don't you know they charge for delivery and transportation costs... really, it's just normal economics. if you will pay, they will charge. how are you going to get 500 gallons of car diesel delivered to your house?

Somebody is ripping you off badly. I just paid $2.83 for cash on a spot delivery.

But, buying 460 gallons makes the M/B fillup look downright cheap.

The "full service" price is $3.30, and that includes boiler service and emergency repair.

Switched to natural gas a few years ago. Thought it was a mistake at first, OK with it now.
But vehicle fuel will work just fine, whatever your time and effort is worth.
The service I had was an automatic fill up, with a 400+ gallon tank, was a financial adventure first time. The final year or so, the delivery person would top up the tank, in the shade, later when the sun hit it, was puking out of the vent tube. Multiple complaints from my neighbor and myself yielded no change.

How long will a full tank last you guys up north? I know there's a lot of factors that will affect how long it'll go but just on average.

I've got about 500 gallons useable on two tanks. It will last from now until the middle early March..........if it's not brutal cold.

Diesel has always been priced higher than heating oil. Your oil dealer made a mistake or just plain ripped you off. I pre-purchase my oil in the summer, paid $2.49/gal for 500 gal that does me for the year.

Move down to NC with VTECH and I, get a heat pump, set the temperature so you are confortable and spend less for a whole year of power for what you are paying for heating oil only.

You guys up north ever suck some of that heating oil out for your diesel? I've found a place around here that sells off road diesel, took a 55 gallon barrel up there in a gasser and filled it up, been using that to blend my biodiesel for the winter...

Naturally, you can do it and save about $.50 per gallon. It's not worth the hassle of the transfer and the potential risk of a $10,000 fine, even though the chances of getting caught are minimal.

Why don't you just post, "...well I robbed this bank last week, then I cheated on my taxes, now I'm on my way out to stick up a liquor store..."

amen!
I have a 90+ natural gas furnace, and a 12 seer a/c I installed in 98, and last years 300.00/month gas bills made me switch out the a/c for a heat pump. power bill this month? 89.00... including my electric water heater! I will install a Honeywell 3stage thermostat when it gets REALLY cold, so the furnace can do some heating too.

Should you douse a furnace filter in Diesel Purge when replacing?

I miss the smell of furnaces burning the stuff... I remember when I used to play outside in the snow during the frigid CT winters.. the faint smell of burnt heating oil lingered everywhere..good times
