What size torx head for my tranny plug?

Hi all,
I'm about to tackle a transmission filter and fluid change, as well as the rear diff. and some brake maintenance. I don't have a torx head socket set, and apparently I need one to drain the transmission fluid pan before removal. I don't want to buy a whole set. Anyone know what size I need?

Drain Plug wrenches

Hold up there, I think the drain plugs take Allen wrenches ( six sided) in either 12 or 14mm sizes. I have both wrenches but it's cold and dark under the car and I'm not going to look now. And I thing Allen attachments are cheaper than Torx.

Be very careful before you use any Torx. some of them are 12 point allen heads and need a special socket bit. Stuff a Torx in there at your peril.

If I remember correctly, it's just a 10mm hex (allen).

For a 85 300CD DO NOT use torx. It is a 5mm allen head for both the tranny and torque converter drain bolts, 13mm socket for the pan bolts. Completely clean the drain plug so the allen head socket sits deeply in the drain plug, it is very easy to round out. Make sure you get new crush washers for both drain plugs, a pan gasket and torque the pan bolts to only 8 Nm ( 70.806 pound-force INCH, or 5.900488 pound-force foot). The drain plug torque is 14 Nm (123.91 Pound-force INCH or 10.32585 pound-force foot). Don't over do it you will warp the tranny pan.

Differential drain and fill plug is a allen head socket, 14MM. Torque for both fill and drain plugs are 50 Nm.

Dave

Torque wrench I use for the tranny is.

Just went under the 85 300D to make sure about the sizes. It's still sitting on jacks.

Alright. DieselGiant's instructions say that it takes a torx head socket. Oh well, I already have the 5 mm allen, that was easy.
