What kind of chain tensioner does the 606 diesel engine in the 95 E300D have? My car now has 135,000 mi and with oil changes every 3500 miles, it still has no detectable stretch, according to my tech. I know the subject has been beaten to a pulp, but why replace a working chain when all else seems ok? Is it possible that many perfectly good chains have been replaced in the fear of catasrophic failure? I haven't seen many posts that say "there I was driving down the road, when POW the chain broke!" If anyone has a high-mileage E300D with recommendations, I'd appreciate the advice.

Thanks

Steve

I'm quite sure that MANY chains have been replaced so that the owner could sleep better at night.

I expect that this car is too new for there to be much history, even from the pro techs. I also expect that it has a ratcheting tensioner and is not a problem.

It sounds like you have checked the chain for stretch and there is none. That being the case, you're probably okay, but I would hate to be the one that tells you that and you end up losing an engine.

Did you check the chain using the factory procedure and a dial indicator, or did you just line up the marks?

Good luck,

Larry,

Thanks for you reply. My tech came to the conclusion that the chain and its components are still ok by checking the marks and by reasoning that fuel mileage and performance are still the same. I suppose the dial test is the best way to check, but that involves the service appointment and a dreaded trip to Dallas to leave the car. I think I should pick a mileage figure that I can live with, say 150K and simply replace the chain. Amazingly, my tech says that he can listen to an engine and tell if the timing is off. Not by voodoo but after 20+ years of diesel experience, he says that a properly running engine has a distinct sound!

Steve
