300 D Fuel Filter

I cannot get my spin-on fuel filter off. I think it has been on there for years. I just got the beauty last month. Any hints on how to get it off. I have laready tried the plier type tool and I could not get it.

You have to loosen the bolt on the top of the filter housing. Seems like it's 19 or 22mm but I can't remember off hand. Loosen the top bolt and then screw off the filter.....

You can use a few passes from a propane blow torch to loosen the bolt's threads from the housing. Just be careful with the heat source.. It generally works quickly.

Correct, mine's a 24mm. Please be very careful if you go the torch routine! When re-installing, pre-fill the filter, install hand tight, and a little more. Some of those bolts have a washer, most do not. All have an "O" ring or two located in a channel machined into the bolt, you'll see.

Rock-n-Roll Guy's thanks a lot. Now I just need to brave the cold weather enough to go outside and get it done.

Not really comfortable with this answer.

Your talking about an open flame, a hot one, over a pint size container of diesel ( the filter) and one of the lines into the connector is rubber and the other is vinyl. I would not recommend this action.

A open end wrench will loosen the top 3 way connector and then the filter can be spun off the housing.

Possibly one of the worse recommendations I've ever seen on this forum. Even though diesel isn't as combustible as gasoline, I don't think I'd mess with a torch on this area.
From your first thread, loosening the top bolt solves your issue, and Dave gave you the correct size.

Actually I did not give any size. But I just checked.

The spin on filter bolt is a 24MM, open end wrench, a socket will not fit.

The other bolt is the return fuel line and that is a 17MM wrench. This is usually used for bleeding the system when replacing filters.

Neither am I, but he claims the bolt is frozen in place, with no spin on the filter........so the propane blow torch will do the trick on the bolt.

As long as there is no visible fuel in the top rim of the fuel filter........he's good to go with a propane blow torch bottle..

I have a bigger problem with so called novices calling this filter a "spin-on" filter, than with removing the bolt with heat from a propane blow torch.. This filter "spins-on" nothing. The filter is seated by tightening the bolt, not by "spinning it on.."

Well we certainly appreciate you for clearing that one up Joe!
Instead of calling some folks novices you should duly note that if you read the post and correctly disseminated the information in the first place you would realize that they simply didn't know about the bolt on top, not that they couldn't get it undone and needed your sage advice about heating up the fuel supply........
Oh, and I spin the filter up to the bolt, then tighten the bolt, so it seems like a spin on to me. But what do I know.......

a propane torch would be ok. if you watch myth busters they held a propane torch to diesel and it would not stay burning. i'd be more worried about the hoses as mentioned before.
