W123 sunroof removal

when removing it, how do you pry off the sunroof headliner?

Just grab it and pull down until it unclips? or.. is there a better way?

I have the FSM document on removing the sunroof.. I just don't understand how to remove that headliner..

tips for the entire removal would be great as well

Quick answer...

-back the sunroof up about 4 inches
-pull down and the liner slides out forward and down. try to apply even pressure t the entire front so you dont fold the liner into a V. I had to pull down harder than I thought would be required.

Ill have to review my old notes to remember how to get it off. It wasnt bad to get it off, its getting it back on thats a pain. I purposely purged these memories, I hated this job so much.

I used a wedge in addition to pulling down. Slip the wedge in and push sideways until you find a clip and twist while pulling down. They pop out easier this way IMO. I thought it was harder to get all the clips back in than to take them out. My sunroof is already manual, so good luck with the rest of the removal.

You probably already saw this but ... http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123SunRoof

Removing the headliner is unnecessary. Remove the liner on the sunroof door, remove the guides on the main tracks and it should come right out.

Still, this is definitely something you want to practice a few times in the junkyard before you attempt it on your own car.

Be very careful pulling down on the sunroof headliner. I bent mine on the initial removal. If you have a wide blade putty knife, use that to pry the clips out of each hole. There are about 4 or 5 clips holding the headliner to the sunroof. I lubed mine after removal. Made it much easier to install and remove the second time. I think the DIY section has some pics under conversion to a manual roof.

To remove the sun roof liner, open the roof about 6 inches, there are about 6 clips across the front that snap into some holes. pull down along the front and they will pop out. may take some force. slide the liner forward and up through the opening and out through the top.

Pulling the liner down will bend it.

Installing it will be the reverse. In from the top, slide it in and use the palm of your hand to snap in the clips.

When working on this part of the W123 sunroof I recommend drinking 4-5
bottles of good beer,

then pull down evenly with a quick snap motion.....

yea... the DIY mentions that there are numerous topics on removing the sunroof... ha!

I was thinking about using some form of prying device to seperate the sunroof headliner

Lance, I know that removing the headliner is a pita.. but I meant the sunroof headliner portion

I was wondering if it would work if you substituted a nice single malt scotch in place of the beer . . . I'll be attempting this soon on mine and want tomake sure i have all the required "tools" on hand.

As written above taking it off is a snap.........actualy about 5......

but putting it back on with out bending the sr headliner out of shape takes skills.

It could be a good idea to try snapping it on prior to putting the roof back in the tracks.

FWIW..I was at a very skilled MB tech today who has transplanted engines, transmissions, and any and all other parts of a car. When I asked him if he would check why my sunroof gets stuck slightly closing, he said "We don't touch sunroofs."

There is a reason for this which all who mess with sunroofs learn quickly.

In the DIY article for converting the sunroof from power to manual some parts have to be moved from the manual sunroof car into the new one.

would the side rails(pictured) make a difference?

it says to use the ones from the manual sunroof car but I do not see any difference. I guess I'll have to go tomorrow and pull the remaining pieces

Help!!!

I'm removing the sunroof panel for prep for paint. Do you remove the rails with the panel, or remove the panel alone by removing the 8 hex nuts that hold it to the brackets????

BTW I posted pictures of the clips you need to release to pull out the headliner. though if I remove the entire roof with the rails I'm not sure I needed to pull the liner.
