I am just replacing the loop style plugs on my '78 300D - what else do I need to do (replace shields, etc)?

new plugs should come with what you need.
I would wire brush the link ends. get them shiney.

ream the holes also before installing.
inspect old plugs as you pull out. If one has broken tip, use a magnetied rod to fish for metal parts inside.
use air pressure to clear out small debri specks.

recheck your 50 or 80 amp strip fuse. make sure you have the right one.

Don't reuse the loop plugs. Replace with the retrofit pencil plugs. They are far superior plugs.
