A simple electrical gremlin question

I went to inspection today (NJ).. Pulled over in a mall to tripple check my tail lights, headlights, etc all that. Everything looks good! So I proceed to go to the inspection place. I fail for my tail lights being out, WHAT! And now NONE of my exterior lights work properly. I will turn my light switch on and off, and sometimes they will come on and other times they wont at all. It's almost tempermental. Last night I DID notice my headlights would flicker every so often, it's never done this before.

I checked my fuses, could you tell me if theres a relay or something to check and where I can look for everything? I have 30 hours to fix it lest I go through the whole inspection process again, and I don't want to do that

Considering no one has made a car for a very long time that has both headlights and tail lamps on the same fused circuit, I'd consider the switch a possibility. I'd also check battery connections to be sure they're clean and tight. I've owned cars that developed bad battery connections that did strange things such as flickering lamps, even though the starter never failed to turn over the motor. Check the simple parts first.

If it were me, I'd go out and wiggle the headlamp switch a bit when the lights aren't working to see if they'll flicker, or give other signs of life. That would almost certainly make me suspect the switch. That's just me, though. Someone else may have more specific data for you. Electrical stuff os hard to troubleshoot unless you're actually looking at it.

On the subject of specific data, what would be the year/model of the vehicle in question?
