5500 RPM's to get into gear SDL

Really weird. All of a sudden trans goes wacky. The engine revs to 5500 before it will go into Drive. Bunch of black smoke out the back (naturally) then a big clunk into gear. Then it will shift normally into the other gears, I guess. Reverse seems to be o.k. Starts all over again when I stop for a light. 113000 on the car. Never any problems in 21 years with the car. Fluid is o.k. I think and no leaks. HELP !!! WHaat to check first ? Only tool I have is a mighty vac. '86 SDL

I hope your not serious.
If you are serious, I hope to god nothing is in front of you.
Lots more than smoke is going to be pouring out of the back if you keep it up
When was the last time the trans was serviced?
Please don't rev it like that. It will make things worse.

5,500rpm? The cutoff is set kind of high no?

When was the trans fluid last changed?

I wouldn't drive it because if you already havn't you will blow the trans.

Yeah your governor sounds a little high...my 602 won't rev any higher than about 5050-5100. Does sound like the B2 problem. If the B2 is bad, it will run fine in 3rd and 4th.

OK the saga continues.....Had the B-2 checked and it's not the problem. Had a used valve body installed my mech had around, and everything worked ok. So we decided to get my valve body rebuilt.

Got it back from the re-builder( someplace in Oklahoma) installed it and old symptoms returned. So logic says, problem in the original/rebuilt valve body. WTF ! Now what ???? This can't be rocket surgery !

I'd say your tach is wrong

I really believe that if your car went into gear at those engine speeds you would have the whole drive line lying under the car and on the road. Are you reading it and reporting it to us in error perhaps?

OK, so you dropped a 1000 RPM

Do you have a vision problem. Please give us the correct information. I don't believe 4500 rpm either.

believe what you want........Really don't know what else to tell you. Got it above 4500 rpm's and it finally shifted. No parts on the street. Only did it once though. I'm sure if I continued to do it, there would be shrapnel all over the place.

As I said, we put in a used Valve body to isolate the issue and it drove fine. Didn't leave the used one in their because we didn't know anything about where it came from or the mileage so, decided to rebuild my VB.

My vision is perfectly fine.....How about some help instead of giving me grief about what the rpm's were EXACTLY.

96 e300d here, any possibility of putting that "unknown" used one back in? If it worked fine with that one, your problem is solved. Good luck

Sure, I guess we can.

The choice is, put the "unknown" one in and throw the dice and wait for it to go eventually as it may be a really old/high mileage, and not and MB updated VB.

Or, find out what the real problem is with my "rebuilt", fix it correctly and be on my way.

What I'm trying to find out is, what the heck could it be. There must be some Tranny wizard out their that knows his stuff. The problem is definitely in the VB. That's established.

It's just a piece of channeled out aluminum with a bunch of springs and balls. All of which have supposedly been rebuilt.

Maybe, I'm just getting anal about wanting to fix it right.
