Knocking in my steering column-'76 300d
Gentlemen (and Ladies if there's any more out there?),
There's been a rattle in my steering column and a lot of play in the wheel since I bought my car 6 months ago. Last week, I had to drive down a very bumpy road and it got significantly worse and the car is now pulling heavily to the right. The sound is like there's two rods in my steering column and one is loose. Noise seems to be coming from the whole column but the sound seems to be inside the car, not in the engine compartment. It rattles whenever the front wheels go over a bump. Obviously I need to tighten something up, but what? Thanks for any help you can offer! |
I have the same issue...It's a mystery I guess...

Check your steering couplings- should be located just below and in front of the brake master cylinder. The bushings on the ones used on W115 and W116 like to deteriorate over time and either the coupling needs to be replaced of rebushed. There is a thread over on "vintage" right now discussing it.

Also, where the steering box mounts on those body style rusts away. That is what usually creates the pulling.

But maybe not. There is a U joint on the 115, last pic. First two are of the couplers. |
