W123 Block Heater

Can someone please tell me how to check to see if I have a block heater. I do not have a cord coming out of the grille. I head that they were installed on some but not all in that era.

You'd see the connector for the cord to attach to at the block heater which would be in the right side of the block above and just to the front of the starter. Visible on my 79 SD by holding a mirror under the manifold above the alternator and shining a flashlight into the mirror.

It's put in place of the middle freeze plug. You'll prongs sticking out of it if there is one.

AFAIK, none of the OM61x engines had block heaters installed at the factory. Certainly not in the W123 chassis (300D-T) but possibly in the W126 chassis (300SD). Any 300SD people know?

The original owner had one year from date of purchase to ask the dealer to install a block heater for free; after the first year you had to pay for it. People in cold climates often took advantage of that offer; people in warm climates usually did not. Thus, my 1985 300D, originally sold and still resident in northern California, did not have a block heater when I bought it.

Because of the difficulty of accessing the right side of the 1985 OM617 engine w/trap catalyst, I chose to install a heater in the lower radiator hose.

See I just don't understand why customers didn't take advantage of it if it was free to install. I have the original coupon book with the sticker for the blocker heater, but the coupon was ripped out. Yet no block heater.

If it was a free add on then of course add the stupid thing even if you're not going to use it.
